Can I connect my Beam to my Optoma HD27E projector? It was connected to a Sky HD box but I’m now using a Chromecast

Hi.  Sonos isn’t compatible with Chromecast.

Thank you!

If you want to give more description of your setup, community members might be able to suggest other possibilities.

Hi @Scamper

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

According to the projector manual, it does not provide HDMI-ARC or optical output and so therefore cannot work directly with a Beam.

You would need to fit an HDMI audio extractor (one that supports at least Dolby Digital, ideally) in between the projector and the Chromecast, and connect the Optical Adaptor supplied with your Beam to it in order to get sound. I can’t recommend specific devices, but if you search for “HDMI audio extractor”, you should find plenty to choose from.

I hope this helps.

Hi @Scamper

You will want to connect the HDMI output of your Chromecast to the input of a HDMI audio extractor, and connect the output of that into an HDMI input of the projector.

Meanwhile, connect an HDMI cable to your Beam, and on the end of that cable, attach the Optical Adaptor that came with the Beam. The optical plug on the adaptor gets plugged into the optical output of the HDMI audio extractor.

Make sure that the Chromecast is outputting an audio format that both the extractor and Beam support (PCM (stereo), Dolby Digital (not Dolby Digital +) or DTS for Beam) and you should be getting sound. If not, go to the Sonos app, select the Beam and tell it to play the TV source.

If you still don’t get audio, you may need to try with another extractor - we can’t guarantee results (there are many extractors out there), but double-check your connections and settings first.

I hope this helps.

You’ve trashed your post since I started writing, so hopefully you’ve figured it out and are enjoying your new setup!

Edit: changed Sky HD box to Chromecast

THANK YOU! Works brilliantly!
