Audio set up question

We have the Playbar and 2 Play 1 speakers set on the same room, but when we watch TV, the audio is terrible because the talking only comes from the playbar and the background sounds come out of the Play 1s.

Watching sports is especially awful because all you hear is the crowd, not the commentary. How do you change it so the Play 1s play the speech and not just the background noise?

This is how the system is supposed to work. There is nothing you can do to change this.

In a Sonos home theater setup, the surround speakers are designed to only play the audio from the left and right surround channels only. Read more here:

Presumably you have your speakers set up so that the Play:1’s are Surround speakers? Or do you have them grouped with the Playbar?
If they are surrounds, you can adjust the volume from them in the room’s settings.

Or, if you own an iOS device, you can do a Trueplay.

There are also adjustments for the level of volume for the surrounds while playing the TV input, found in the room controls of the controller.
