Up until today I had an Xbox One X and outputted sound via Xbox optical into the Sonos Playbase (set up as 5.1).

Today I upgraded to the Xbox Series X not realising they had done away with the Optical out. My TV doesn't do pass through HDMI so I can't output the Xbox to my TV in 5.1 and then back out of the TV via optical. I can't only do this in stereo 2.0, which is what I'm doing for now.

I think my solution needs to be some kind of split box that allows me to split the HDMI cable into HDMI and optical.

The problem being as the Xbox uses HDMI 2.1 for 4K 120hz, I need a switch that can do this for me....or at the very least 4k 60hz for now.....but also HDR as well.

Anyone successfully done this? I don't want to upgrade to Sonos Arc as this means I need a new TV.

Any help appreciated.

It’s going to be difficult to find a 120GHZ switch.  60Hz is easy to find but understandable that you don’t want to limit your video quality.

As for the Arc, no you will not have to upgrade your TV to use it.  You can use an HD Fury Arcana, similarly to how you wanted to use a switch, without any restriction on video or audio quality.  It can even convert.

Of course, that’s going to be $1000 upgrade, so not necessarily an easy decision.  It is what I’m using to get Atmos audio from my xbox one s.

Thanks for this. I'm actually struggling for even a 60hz/4k/HDR splitter that would allow optical out to my playbase. Any links or ideas? Could be a good stopgap for a couple of years until I upgrade to Arc and an 8k tv…

That Fury does look like a good option....but think I would like to solve it on the cheap with my current playbase until I go for full commit of Arc and 8k all at once.

Would this do?

John B you are a star! I ordered this as its cheap enough to take a chance on. Hooked it all up and it works. It extracts the audio signal from the HDMI and sends it out of the optical. I have an added optical switch box this then feeds into, then into the back of the Sonos. When I look on the Sonos app, what used to say 2.0 when my Xbox was on now says 5.1 so all good.

Only draw back is it will only run at 60 fps and not 120 fps, but thats not a concern right at this moment as I only have a 60hz oled. When I upgrade my TV to 8k I will upgrade so the Sonos Arc at the same time, but as a cheap solution this gets me back into 5.1 gaming!

Thanks again.

How are you getting on with the Series X?, my two have the Xbox Ones but seems the X will play all their games with no issues.

My series X is lovely! However I have an audio lag. My setup is Playbase, subwoofer and two play ones. The Playbase is connected to the tv (Samsung Q80T with the latest 1403 firmware) via optical and the Xbox is connected via hdmi to the tv. Any ideas anyone? I am assuming it is the tv and I might need a splitter?
