Switch between surround sound and stereo with Sonos AMP passive speakers

If I have two passive speakers with the sonos AMP (connected with HDMI ARC) on either side of my TV and a pair of Play 3’s in the back for surround. Is there anyway to mute the Play 3’s in the back when listening to music so I get a more regular stereo setup? I really want to have two passive speakers for stereo music listening and then use the same speakers as a part of a 4.0 surround system when watching TV/movies.

Is this possible?

Yes, this is configurable.

What you described would be setting music playback to ambient.

You can also switch off the two rear surrounds (Play:3’s) by using the switch in the Amp room settings in the Sonos App - goto “Settings/System/[Amp Room]/Surround Audio” (also see the screenshot attached that shows the toggle-switch option).
