Do you really need 2 of the same devices for surround sound and why is that. I have 7 speakers collected over the years and all are differnt models do I really need another to use as surround sound. I was hoping to connect a Sonos bean and Era 300 together.

Yes, it is a requirement. As a guess, it’s due to the necessary sound envelope to stereo pair a set of speakers. If you were to be allowed to have different speakers, one might be different than the other, which would be trouble for surround sound, much less a stereo pair. But that’s just my opinion, I am not sure if there’s a listed reason, just the requirement. 

Yes.  Unlike models cannot be paired or used as surrounds, save for the non-SL/SL model Ones.
