I have read that Stereo PCM is a uncompressed stereo channel and therefore I am curious as to how the Arc soundbar sometimes diverts sound to the surround speakers.

It also happens when playing Dolby Digital 2.0

I thought that only when playing Multichannel or Dolby Digital 5.1 channels was this possible?

Perhaps someone could explain 🤔

Cheers 🍻

My understanding of this is that when broadcasters encode their stereo signals specifically for Dolby Pro Logic II playback, it allows them to deliver surround and localization effects over stereo services that are more like ‘discrete’ 5.1 transmissions — without compromising regular stereo and mono playback.

So it’s sound engineering ‘trickery’ from what I can discover…

@Ken_Griffiths

This redirection to surround sound never happens when there is only speech but when other sounds or music is played it then happens.

Clever studio ‘trickery’ is the answer then.

Thanks for the explanation.
