Hi,

I am trying to figure out how I can use sonos (and also which sonos devices) using it both as audio output for my beamer and to listen to music from a DVD/CD player and stream from a smartphone.

I will basically have a TV and a Beamer as outputs:

  • TV : Video & Audio output (HDMI) - using the TV speaker as audio output
  • Beamer: Video output (HDMI) - the Audio which goes to the beamer should always go to the Sonos Setup

I want to do the following setup using an HMDI Matrix 4x2:

Inputs:

  1. Apple TV
  2. DVD/CD Player
  3. TV Box
  4. Computer or Gaming setup

Outputs:

  1. TV (Video & Audio)
  2. Beamer (Video) - Audio to Sonos Setup (coaxial or optical)

The idea was to get the sounds from a pair of Sonos One (or One SL?). But maybe I also require more equipment. Anyone could help?

Setup Idea

I am not sure how I can make all this equipment work together and don’t really know what to use form Sonos. I would also like to avoid latency in the audio while watching a movie.

I also have ductwork (empty tubes) going from my setup with the matrix to the speakers making it possible to wire the whole installation.

I also want to go forward with a Stereo sound system and not a 5.1 for budget purposes (No AV receiver and less speakers)

Any ideas on how to proceed for this setup?

Regards

A Sonos One or One SL is not designed to be connected to a TV or projector. I would use a Sonos soundbar like a Beam or Arc to connect to the projector instead.

@GuitarSuperstar

Thank you for the answer.

I have updated the setup with an Arc. I would also then have to most probably switch go with an Toslink cable to the Arc as it is quite far from the HDMI Matrix and then convert back to HDMI.

I am not sure this will work though. What do think?

Remember you need HDMI-ARC if you want to connect the Arc via HDMI. I do not see a device in your set up that has HDMI-ARC. The HDFury Arcana can convert HDMI in to HDMI-ARC. You's get a lot of conversion in your set up you want to transport HDMI via Toslink though (if that is at all possible).

It would be helpful if you talked about what sort of audio and video quality you’re looking for with this setup, as well as what you think you’ll want to expand to in the future. You don’t want to setup something that works for you now, but will have to replaced when you decide you want to upgrade.

For example, on the video side of things, what video quality are your TV and projector?  You need to make sure your cables and HDMI matrix match the quality you want to achieve.  Also know that most matrices, when you are play a source on two displays at once, will play video at the lowest video quality of the two displays.  You would need to get a more expensive  matrix that will take the higher video quality and downscale the quality for your ‘weaker’ display.

I agree with the above that you should look into HDFury if you want to use a Sonos Arc with your projector.  The Arcana is a great device, but since you also want a matrix, you may want to consider the upcoming VRROOM product, which is an excellent HDMI matrix and Arcana functions built in, along with many other features and flexibility.  Might be something worth waiting for, though couldn’t say when it will be available to the public.
