Folks .. I've just spent almost a week sorting out my Sonos system and resolving issues. Some of this info might help someone. Especially if you don't have time to read 100's of articles online. Ironic I know!

I initially had S1 and S2 setups.

S1 - 2 x Play 5's as a stereo pair

S2 - Playbar + Gen 1 Sub + 2 x Play:1's

Issue 1 - never managed to connect both Play1's as rear surrounds

Playlists not able to share between S1 & S2

Fed up with latest S2 app .. appalling!

Decided to downgrade everything to S1

Tip 1: Sonos says to reset every speaker BUT instructions say to hold join button until flashing red & white etc

Went round in circles until one time when I held it longer until I got green flashing lights .. then it worked as expected.

Tip2: (Should maybe be Tip 1)

Keep your S2 app so you can downgrade to S1 .. (same holding join button much longer trick also helped with this.)

Tip3: Gave up with using Rear surrounds so now using Play1's as a stereo pair in the main TV Room group.

Tip4: most homes have a wifi range extender in use .. and Sonos doesn't like them. Advice is to have at least one Home Theatre device connected by ethernet cable.

Hope some of these help you!

Hello @BobbyBaxter09, welcome back!

I am sorry to hear it was not straight forward, but I am glad you were able to solve most of the issues you faced.

In regards to the Play:1’s as surrounds issue, I’ve seen it quite a few times here in the Community, have you had the Wi-Fi disabled on your Sonos Playbar?

This option disables the network card of the soundbar making it impossible to connect to the surrounds via the Sonos private network, unless you hardwire everything (soundbar and surrounds )via Ethernet directly to the Router.

I would always recommend reaching out to our Support Team for live troubleshooting and guidance, as they have tools at their disposal to provide you with information and advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports.

I hope these tips will help other users as they helped you.

Hi Sotiris,

Thanks for your response and advice. The reason I've got the Playbar connected via ethernet cable is that one of my speakers is reported to be using a range extender. These are vital in my solid granite house.

It's worth mentioning that Sonos does not specify WHICH device is using the extender! Not ideal.

Thoughts?

Bobby

Hey @BobbyBaxter09, thanks for the quick response.

Now that I have a little bit more information, since you have the Playbar hardwired, your Sonos speakers communicate with each other using the private SonosNet network (IF the Wi-Fi is enabled within the Sonos App on your Sonos Playbar).

This network is different from the private network I mentioned earlier the surround speakers use to connect to the main soundbar. That is why I asked if you have Wi-Fi enabled or disabled on your Sonos Playbar.

I understand the need for a Wi-Fi extender but that still is an unsupported setup for the Sonos System. It might work, it might not.

It's worth mentioning that Sonos does not specify WHICH device is using the extender! Not ideal.

You might be able to get that information if you contact our Support Team after you Submit Diagnostics via the Sonos App.

Thanks again.

Please don't worry about this. I listen to music 60% of the time and the rear speakers provide a bit more "depth" .. in my humble opinion. (I'm no audiophile)

What I have finally managed to get going meets my expectations and I honestly can't face all the faff of trying to get BOTH Theatre Rear Surrounds set up. Or risk jeopardizing what I already have.

So thank you sir.

Best regards

Bobby
