Can anyone else confirm if the SONOS provided HDMI cable, lacks support with eARC pass through volume control?

I found when I hooked up the Arc with the Sonos provided HDMI cable to the eARC connection on the LG CX - I was unable to control the volume on the TV using the LG smart remote, even with HDMI passthrough and eARC enabled.

However, when I replaced the Sonos provided HDMI with a high quality one from Amazon, immediately the TV recognized the Arc and I could control volume with the LG remote. All settings on the CX remained unchanged.

Hi @sixoversix.

Thanks for reaching out and for the detailed post.

Sonos Arc is using the Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) next-gen version of ARC implemented in HDMI 2.1.

First, we need to ensure that the HDMI-eARC cable of the Arc is connected to the TV’s HDMI-eARC port as well.

All four HDMI ports on your TV are 2.1 enabled but the first one brings eARC.

Let me know how it goes and if you have any other questions or run into any issues, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Hi @Annazel S, yes the LG CX has 4 2.1 hdmi ports and the Arc is plugged into the eArc port. I wanted to see if anyone with the same setup can confirm this setup issue or not.

Hi @sixoversix.

Thank you for your reply.

Some of the community members might provide their own opinion about this, and it will be much appreciated.

In the meantime, it might help to check this article that contains some configuration to use an LG Magic Remote with Sonos home theater speakers.

Just wanted to make sure you have you HDMI cec turned on, its annoying that you have to turn it on, but once i did i can control everything from the magic remote.

Agree, I’ve found that to be the case as well - making sure CEC control was turned on. I thought mine was on, but turns out it was not.

It was helpful to read that the Sonos Beam/Arc will only submit to IR control.

Then, using the Sonos page to set up Magic Remote - https://support.sonos.com/s/article/3479?language=en_US

Although the menu layout is different on the CX model. To get to that section where you set up the remote to control a device, you will need to press the settings button, then go to All Settings, then Connections. Select Device Connections.

From here, make sure CEC/Simplink are turned on (I turned on both). Then you should be able to go ahead and update control setting for each input, including the Sonos. Whether connected via HDMI or optical dongle. From here you will be able to follow the directions in Sonos’ LG Magic Remote set up page and all will be good.

Just to clarify, the eArc is for HDMI port 2 not port 1 I believe. Please confirm as that is what I have mine set as and it works and I see the fancy Sonos black/white screen.

Hi there @Jeffrey_35.

Thanks for reaching out and for looking into this.

My apologies and let me clarify that there’s only 1 port that has the eARC and it should be on HDMI 2, according to LG support page here is the link:

Is this issue resolved? I have the same set up as you with absolutely no issues using the Sonos HDMI cable provided with the Arc.  Just since nobody else has mentioned using the provided cable yet.

The provided cable has worked fine in my set up.
