Kinda strange that people thank corporate  for giving a completely bogus excuse (after a year) for not implementing a basic feature yet are more than happy to charge a premium price for their equipment. As a new SONOS owner (with a tech and business background), I would have far more respect if the truth was given. SONOS just didn't want to pay for DTS. Period. C'mon please show some integrity to your customers. They will continue to love you for it.

Or maybe DTS requires a hardware solution and the software only solution proposed by Sonos was rejected.  Certainly a more fitting explanation for 1 year of time between proposing it and calling it off than "SONOS just didn't want to pay for DTS. Period."  If they didn't want to pay for it, why take a year to decide, and then offer to refund the purchases of disappointed people for up to a year past warranty?

Seems fair. I mean like you say it's not designed for that. so i assume you are going to stop trying to sell it as a surround sound system. Take all references to it being a surround sound system from your website as it cannot really handle the basics that almost EVERY OTHER surround sound system can handle?

Very poor. I replaced an old Yamaha amp that supported dts with this system. Come on sonos. Listen to your customers.slot of us have spent thousands on this gear yet a $400 cheap surround sound system supports more features

More features? That's a little unfair. Before i bought playbar as my surround system, I looked into all options. But playbar definitely had more features/benefits for me...and sounded better than the surround systems around the same price.

To return or not to return - that is the question.  I think that it's otherwise a great system and I guess that's what SONOS is counting on.  A lot people are not going to go through the hassle of returning 4 components and re configuring their whole sound system.  I am shocked by the whole thing.  If it's a money issue couldn't they charge for an upgrade or something like that?

@Jgatie-  my point was only to say why not be more transparent? If what you said was what actually happened I could completely respect that. After all, why should SONOS damage their rep because of external factors beyond their control? Just say that a software only solution couldn't be reached rather than implying that it could be done but because "most tv's don't pass DTS" we aren't going to do it. A FAR SMARTER move would at least imply that they REALLY wanted to satisfy their customers. I can only speak for myself but I certainly didn't get the impression that they cared about their customer's needs whatsoever. As far as the returns go...calculated risk. Far more people on these boards say they will return their equipment than will actually do it. It is a great piece that sounds great. It's just not the fully functional surround sound solution that's being advertised.

How should I know? I'm not privy to the inner workings of audio codec licenses. I do know that when given the choice between "they hate their customers" and "it was beyond their control", I believe that most companies tend toward the latter, no matter what the public facade. Assuming the former without considering the latter is letting the emotion of disappointment rule out over logic. No company with the successful run like Sonos takes an entire year to make a decision that boils down to "Hahah, let's screw our customers and take another enormous publicity hit because we are cheap!" It is too simplistic and makes no sense. So there must be a lot more going on behind the scenes.

Sonos have already said a few times that the lack of DTS is not a technical limitation of the product. It is therefore EITHER - a licensing issue with DTS not permitting a software decoding licence or making it prohibitively expensive from Sonos' point of view OR - a commercial decision that the cost of licensing and implementing the appropriate changes to support DTS would not yield sufficient additional revenue to make it worthwhile. I think its probably the latter, and must be be very difficult to quantify, but they've taken a gamble on it anyway. Probably upsetting a handful of people (in proportion to those happy with the product) is a risk worth taking even if that noisy minority go around slagging off Sonos to their friends and family etc. When DTS is widely supported by TVs and streaming services then it will be different matter entirely since the product will no longer be fit for purpose, even in the supported configuration. I hope Sonos revisit this decision sooner rather than later but am not holding out for it any more.

This really can not be! There are only few TV's supporting 5.1. most of them only support 2.0. So why shall a customer buy a 5.1 system from SONOS for about 2000 Bugs when the system is only usable as a 2.0!!!

There's nothing about this whole situation that makes sense. Personally, if the emotion of dissapointment overuled my logic I would be ranting like others about returning my whole system. On the contrary, ironically, I already owned a Samsung Bluray player that solved this issue. I am merely stating that I understand why others feel screwed over. I can certainly agree that all technical issues may not all be SONOS's fault. However, there's no question that the public's interpretation of their explanation is.

How does you Samsung BluRay player solve this? Because is decodes Dolby Digital to is optical out? 
And how would you add a chromecast to your setup without the need to plug the optical cable back into the TV?
Does your Samsung BluRay player also have a HDMI in?
Mine only has one HDMI out and a HDMI port that says "Audio only" (whatever that means).

Do a search as many (smarter than I) have mentioned on various threads, several samsung blu ray players have the ability to convert DTS signals into Dolby Digital. Add an optical switch out to the playbar if you will be running multiple devices (not the ridiculously inferior plug it into a tv for glorious stereo to fake surround option being officially suggested).

Is there a workaround to get dolby digital from the WD TV live media player? I have tons of movies in DTS but not getting dd from it.

People, 
we all know John is a "small light" in the Sonos organisation.
Paid to tell us what we want to hear, or in this case, try to convince us, that Playbar is a good product even without DTS support. 
Which it isn't!

I could write a long story here, how I have send many improvement suggestions (more sensitive volume control especially in the low volume range, ramp up the alarm volume over a couple of minutes, put a sleep button on the widget, include google all music,...)  to Sonos from the early days, but nothing of it ever made it into their software.
Because they back office ignores what we write here. they follow their own "plans" for function integration, which look to me, as if they were prioritized by someone who has never red this forum in his life. 

Our ideas and complaints might get forwarded to their "developer team", but there seems either not enough capacity, or not enough talent to implement it.
Or some director does not see the benefit to invest money in DTS support.

So i say: let's stop talking and start acting.

Let's all apply for a refund, and return our Playbar, Sub (if you have), and Play3 or Play1 that you might have bought as surround speakers to Sonos, with the simple reason: 
Not fit for intended use - does not support DTS.

If all of us 1400 frustrated user only return a Playbar, Sonos looses 1400 x 650 USD = almost 1mio USD turnover.
Add some 700-800 Subs and Play3 pairs to it, and it could sum up to almost 2mio USD.

Plus the additional loss of turn over by our recommendation to not buy Sonos products to our 1400 x approx. 500+ = 700.000+ friends on Facebook and Twitter.

I hope this will give Sonos senior management enough reason to reconsider investing into DTS support.

Well I'm looking round to see if I can find a soundbar and sub (with Dts of course ) which has better or equal sound quality then I'll be emailing Sonos for a refund. £1200 ($1977) u can get some Gd equipment with that sort of money.

I've been looking at the sony ht-st7... Looks pretty Gd from the review has 3 Hdmi inputs and supports all dts, dts Hd, dd, true dd.... U get the picture.... Ashame like Sonos but needs must

Netflix, Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus, Vudu, Xbox Video, Blu-Ray Disc's all use DTS.   I can't use 5.1 surround sound on any of those services.... I am a very upset customer. I want DTS support added ASAP. I didn't spend 2k for this 😞 - very dissatisfied customer.

I've just bought this...wanting to add this to my existing PLAY's but have been let down by the lack of DTS support.  I just assumed it would of supported DTS, DD and PCM audio... like any other cheaper soundbar.  More annoyed that this isn't a feature you'll include in the future.  I won't be buying 2 PLAY 1's now for my rear speakers...
