I'm considering buying the Playbar for our new apartment.. But I have some thoughts before I buy (besides the high price tag).

I already have 2 Play:1s which I plan to be back surround speakers. But I'm unsure about some things:

1. Is it not possible to connect the Playbar wirelessly to the network without the Sonos Bridge? Or do you have to plug it directly in my router via a cable?

2. My Setup consists of a Samsung Smart Tv, a PS4 and an Nvidia Shield. Will I be able to experience the full sound experience from these sources? (PS4 and Nvidia are plugged in the TV by HDMI).

I hope someone can clarify this for me.

Thanks 🙂
1) Yes, it is. No, you don't, but it's not a terrible thing if you do.

2) Depends of the settings of each device. The TV needs to output Dolby Digital for the PLAYBAR to process. I'm pretty sure the PS4 does, I have one at home that I'm 90% sure has Dolby Digital. The TV's settings should, but it may be greyed out when you're not sending a dolby digital signal to it, I don't own a Samsung and can't check. The NVIDIA shield is where I think you'll have the greatest issue, I've seen a lot of posts in these boards that seems to indicate that it won't send out a dolby digital signal.

Hey Guys the Sheild outputs Dolby digital but the specific format if you want surround is dependent on the app. Works great with Kodi on the Sheild which passes through dd5.1 and also converts DTS to dd5.1 ime.

That was actually my next question, if Kodi could output "true" dd5.1 to the Playbar.. 🙂 Did you experience any issues with other devices connected to the TV? (PS4, xbox etc)

The thing I want to find out is: Can I connect the Sonos Playbar to my TV and play kodi with now sound issues from my nvidia shield? (which is connected by HDMI to the tv)

Unfortunately I can only answer "maybe". I'm getting 5.1 now but this hasn't always been the case (Sonos updates, Kodi updates). Worst case you get 2.0.

That is if you have the playbar connected directly to the tv. What if you plug it directly to the shield?

Im not following.....Can you explain how you would connect the playbar to the Sheild considering the bar does not have HDMI input?

The shield has an optical output, so using that?
Dude the Nvidia Shield doesn't have optical out.

Am I missing something about your setup?

Dude that is my bad! I was certain it had.. So the way I would go ahead with this would be:

Sonos playbar -> connect optical to my TV.

PS4 and Nvidia Shield, connect via HDMI to my TV

Use Playbar with both ps4 and Nvidia shield right? 🙂

Yes will work, just confirm your tv has optical out 😉 Wether you get 5.1 DD is the maybe.

Tbh I don't notice a difference btw 2.0 and 5.1. If you want to hear a difference add a sub, huge.

My TV has optical out luckily.. 🙂 Thanks for the reply
Hi all, you know if this (Turtle Beach Audio Advantage) cable will work to connect the Nvidia Shield directly with the Sonos Playbar and get DD 5.1?

It's from 2015 though and it's not anymore available on Amazon.

Reason is that my Samsung TV optical out doesn't to put through DD 5.1..... 😞
