Pairing original tv remote with Beam

I just received and set up my Beam. Because I do not have an HDMI ARC connection on my 65 inch 5 year old Visio tv, I had to use the optical connector. The Beam is working properly with my tv. How to I train my original tv remote to control the audio on the Beam. I understand that this can be accomplished.

    It's not straight forward but I did do this yesterday programing my Apple TV remote (IR). I'm going from memory because I'm not connected to my speaker from work and will not be for a few weeks. It was something like this....
    More > Settings > Room Settings > [Choose Room] > [something about remote or pairing].

    I am having the same issue. I have tried what Marshall24 suggested but no luck. I am not connected to an HDMI ARC. Do we have to be connected to the ARC?
