Our current surround configuration is the basic bar and 2 SL Ones, but I want to integrate our Five as well. I’m interested in the buying the Move speaker and was wondering if it would pair up with the surround system along with our Five? If not, would an additional Five pair up and be a part of our surround system too?

A full home theater setup with a Beam consists of:

  • Sonos Beam
  • Sonos Sub (up to two if one is the Gen 3 Sub)
  • A pair of rear surround speakers (Example: 2 One SLs, 2 Fives, 2 Play:3s)

This setup creates a 5.1 (or 5.2) system. You cannot add any more speakers to this home theater setup. You can only “group” more speakers, but they wouldn’t be part of the 5.1 setup. And if you “group” more speakers to your 5.1 setup, you will experience a slight audio delay from the additional speakers when watching TV or movies. Listening to music will be still be in sync.

The Move cannot be part of the 5.1 setup because they cannot connect as surround speakers to the Beam.

If you wanted two Fives to be part of your home theater setup, you would have to replace the 2 One SLs with the Fives. You cannot use all four speakers in the 5.1 setup.

Also, only Sonos speakers of the same model can be stereo paired or used as surround speakers.
