I recently bought the Sonos Surround Set. Just bought Apple TV 4K. My TV is a Sony Bravia from 2015. I’m aware that I won’t get True Dolby or Dolby Atmos until I upgrade my TV or get a Fury Arana. 

However, some stuff is odd. For example, I get Dolby Digital 2.0 on iPlayer when viewed through my TV, but I get Stereo PCM on iPlayer when viewed on the Apple Box. I could understand this (because the Apple Box isn’t connected to the Arc) but I get Dolby Digital 2.0 or better on some apps on the Apple Box. To me, this suggests that I *can* get DD or better through the Apple Box, so why isn’t it working on iPlayer? I tried the same TV shows for the comparison. 

What is the audio setting on the Apple TV set to?

Audio Format: Dolby Digital 5.1

Change Format: On (I’ve tried toggling this on and off)

 

Also, strangely, Default Audio Out says “TV Speakers” but then when I click on it, “Receiver Speakers” is ticked, and when I try to select “Other Wireless Speakers” it shows that “TV Speakers” are selected” and gives me the option to click on “Living Room (Cinema)”. When I do that, it plays the main sound (dialogue etc) through the rear speakers!

Although I can’t say for sure, I wouldn’t discount the possibility that the BBC are restricting things in some way, or that the macOS/iOS version of the iPlayer app just asks for a different audio stream type, for whatever reason, than the TV’s (Android?) iPlayer app.

As you’re able to get Dolby Digital on some Apple TV sources, things are very likely set up as they should be and any variances are likely due to content or software - which is to say it’s unlikely anything can be done, short of contacting the companies involved (BBC and Apple).

As far as I can tell (on Google, quickly) iPlayer doesn’t support more than 2 channels anyway, so you’re unlikely to miss out on extra channels, regardless of the audio codec used.
