the wife wants a fake wall and the tv recessed in it.
Can I position an ARC or BEAM in their own recess or will they not perform unless mounted on the wall?

IMO this would have a significantly detrimental effect on the sound. That is really going to mess with side firing speakers and the Arc's upwards firing speakers.
Aesthetics matter, but let's get our priorities right
