On the website it says:

Sonos products that connect to your TV using HDMI-ARC are compatible with both IR and RF remotes. Make sure your TV has CEC enabled and your Sonos home theater product is connected to the HDMI-ARC port on your TV.

So, what I don’t understand is how does that allow my remote (an RF remote to a A/V receiver) to control the volume?  If I have the A/V receiver connected via a normal HDMI cable, and the Beam connected to the HDMI-ARC, when I adjust the volume on my A/V receiver, will the Beam adjust it’s volume?

Hi.  Where does an AVR fit into this?  A Sonos HT setup normally replaces an AVR.  I would expect the remote to be a TV remote.  Please would you give more details of your setup?

What I have is the Sonos Beam Soundbar, which doesn’t replace my A/V receiver.

So how are you using them in combination?

I have the A/V receiver connected to the TV (a Samsung Q9F0 via HDMI.  Then I have the Beam connected (or will have) to the TV via HDMI-ARC.  So, my question is, if I connect them this way, and I use my RF remote to change the volume of the A/V receiver, will that change the volume of the Beam.

Sorry I don't know.  It sounds like the AVR is just acting as an HDMI switch, not an amplifier. Without a direct connection from the Beam to the AVR I would have my doubts, but only one way to be sure.

Normally the TV will control the volume of the Beam using the HDMI-CEC protocol via the HDMI-ARC port. You control the TV with its own remote. I have no idea if the AV will also use HDMI-CEC to let the TV control the volume on the Beam.

Can you clarify why you are still using the AV receiver (with or without speakers)? This is not a supported setup.

106rallye has the correct answer.  If you are using the TV speakers, then the Beam will control it’s volume through the HDMI-ARC.  The reason that I’m using the A/V receiver is that I have in wall speakers that are controlled directly from the A/V receiver.  I suspect that if I told the A/V receiver to use the TV Speakers, everything would work correctly.

I’m not sure this would work. Why would a receiver have the capability use the TV-speakers, when it is built to not use the TV speakers.

Let me understand your set up. You only use external sources connected to the Amp (as TV sound will only reach the Beam as it is on HDMI-ARC? You only connect the surround speakers to the receiver and let the Beam handle FL-center-FR? Will this be in sync?

Most A/V receivers (at least newer ones) have the capability to power external speakers (like wall mounted speakers such as I have) or use the speakers built into the TV.  This is a configuration option.  I have been using the wall mounted speakers, but if I opt to use the Beam, then I could switch to using the TV Speakers, which would then work with the Beam.

I'd opt for the Sonos Amp to power the external rear speakers and get an all-Sonos 5.0 system that's designed to work together. Can you report back if your set up works?
