I set up my brand new Samsung 2020 Frame tv and brand new Sonos Arc and Gen3 sub three weeks ago and I can’t get the arc to stay on properly using the HDMI eArc inputs.  It randomly will stop working and sometimes sound will go off for just a second, then back on again.  Unplugging the arc, cycling the inputs on the TV, or going into the expert sound settings on the TV and toggling some buttons does get the sound working again- but who wants to do that sometimes 5 times an hour?  It appears to me that the Samsung TV intermittently has trouble recognizing the arc.  When in the expert sound setting and watching the connections- the TV will sometimes toggle between HDMI and HDMI e-Arc.  It has been so frustrating that I have just started leaving the arc turned off and use just the TV volume. I have read all of the online answers that have been posted and tried all the suggestions.  Just to clarify:

  1. This issue has not been resolved.
  2. Updates from Samsung and Sonos have not yet fixed the issue
  3. Someone needs to identify why the Samsung TV sometimes does not see the recognize the e-Arc connection for the Sonos arc and provide an update that can fix it.
  4. When working, Dolby Atmos on Sonos arc and Gen3 Sub sounds AWESOME!

I am almost to the point of returning the Sonos gear and finding another sound solution that works.  Can Sonos please provide an answer better than “We are working on it”?

Update:  I did try something I found surfing the net about the importance of the order of connecting devices to a TV that has e-ARC.  I tried that and have gone 48 hours without any sound shutdowns.  Not a very long sample- but I am hopeful.  Here is the link I found:

Keeping fingers crossed that this continues to stop the sound shutoffs during use.

This can be caused by a badly behaved external device, such as a set-top box, attempting to commandeer the audio. A solution is to disable CEC on those devices that don’t require it.

In the absence of a CEC config option, a little ‘CEC-less’ adapter can be inserted into that device’s HDMI cable. This physically breaks the connection on the relevant HDMI pin.

Update #2:  Well, this did not work as I had the sound drop again several times yesterday.  Had to unplug Sonos arc and plug back in to get sound working again.

Update #3:  So, after lengthy internet research on eARC and Sonos Arc, I decided to turn off eARC on the samsung tv.  For streaming devices that support Dolby Atmos, it can be played on the Sonos arc with eARC turned off.  DD+ is capable of providing dolby atmos and can do it without TV that supports atmos as long as the streaming device does and the soundbar does.  So, since I have turned off eARC on the TV, I have not had one drop sound or sound shutting off.  I don’t use a blue ray player hardly ever, do everything streaming, so I think keeping eARC off will solve the problem and still allow dobly atmos sound.
