I have a playbar 5.1 setup and recently tried to play a movie that was encoded with AAC 5.1 audio. When that didn't work, I found a thread that said that the playbar only will support AC3. My question is: can the Beam play AAC 5.1 or would it be better to re-encode the file to AC3.

No, AAC 5.1 is not supported, use AC3 (aka DD 5.1) instead.
