Hello guys! This is my first post so forgive anything which may seem a little out of place for the forum.

Okay this is my setup:

  1. Sonos Arc,
  2. One SL (2),
  3. Sonos Sub (Gen3),
  4. Denon AVC-X3700H.

I have quite a number of HDMI devices such as Blu-ray DVD player, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Sky etc hence my need for the AV receiver. I’ve connected the Sonos Arc directly to my Panasonic TX-55HZ1500B which support eARC on all it’s four ports which are currently enabled.

After connecting these to the receiver, I’m only able to use the receiver when it’s off else the Sonos system doesn’t produce ANY sound whatsoever! Funny story is, I’m still able to use the receiver to switch between devices while it’s off and it gives the correct resolution such as UHD, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Vision etc for the devices that support those.

My first attempt to connect them found that it all worked together while the receiver was on but after needed to switch the systems off completely, the whole thing fell apart! I currently don’t have the Sonos Amp because it doesn’t support all the Dolby goodness so, please any suggestions as to how I can get these to work well together will be appreciated.

The Denon receiver collects the TV audio which is the Sonos system I tried to stop this, but it just does it by itself regardless.

Hi @SammyMarie

Welcome to the Sonos Community and thanks for reaching out to us with your concern.  To help you out with this, I'd like to clarify some information and ask a few questions from you.

  • Your current set up
    • Sonos was set up as a home theater system and the Sonos Arc is connected to your Panasonic TX-55HZ1500B via HDMI-eARC.
    • Your Blu-ray DVD player, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Sky devices are all connected to your Denon AVC-X3700H receiver via HDMI?
    • The Denon AVC-X3700H receiver is connected to your Panasonic TX-55HZ1500B via HDMI. Are these correct?
  • Can you tell us what troubleshooting steps you have done before reaching out to us?
    • Have you tried playing the TV without the Denon connected? Did you get audio on your Sonos devices from the TV?
    • Have you tried playing and switching from your Blu-ray DVD player, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Sky connected to your Panasonic TX-55HZ1500B via HDMI (without the Denon) and your Sonos Arc connected via HDMI-eARC, did you get audio on from the TV to your Sonos?
    • Have you tried updating your TV software?

It would be great if you can submit a diagnostic and reply here with the confirmation number, let me take a look at it for you. Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns, we'll be glad to assist you.

So basically, you’re trying to use the Denon receiver as an HDMI switch.  Sounds like when the Denon os on, it does not send the audio to the TV, as it assume you intend to play audio through the receiver.

I would look at getting an HDMI switch  to control your audio source.  You can keep the Denon if you still have speakers connected, or get rid of it as you wish.

Not sure why you brought up the Sonos Amp...what are hoping to use that for?

Hello Rowena B,

You alright? Thanks for the reply! Yes, I tried all those troubleshooting steps and the sound works fine without the Denon receiver. And to answer your first set of questions:

  • Yes, that’s correct.
  • Yes, that’s correct.
  • Yes, it’s connected to the TV via HDMI to an eARC port as this TV supports eARC on all it’s four ports.
  • The TV’s software is already updated.

Hello Melvimbe,

Well, issue is I also got a HDMI switch to test out and it basically didn’t work with the Sonos setup no matter what I tried!! Also, the features offered by the Denon receiver such as 4K@60Hz, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Vision and the rest of the Dolby goodness aren’t supported with the HDMI switches without also interfering with the sound going to the Sonos home theatre setup through the TV which happened during my test. I tried to detach the sound somehow coming from the TV to Denon receiver which it claimed to be able to do, this also didn’t work! It works absolutely fine ONLY when switched off and transitions between the devices perfectly as well.
