I want to get the TV sound out into the room. It's a large room with very high ceiling which makes for echo and muddy sound. We can't understand a lot of speech on the TV. I'm wondering about using a soundbar behind the sofa where we sit - about 15 feet from the TV. This could get the sound closer to our ears. Can this be done?
Not effectively. The PLAYBAR and PLAYBASE both connect to the TV with an optical cable to get the data. I suppose if you could find a long enough cable it might work. I don't know what the maximum allowable length is on optical, there must be some degradation, I just don't know what it is.

There's another potential, which was discussed earlier this week in another thread. I've not tried this solution, but I'll list it here. Basically, it involves both a PLAYBAR or PLAYBASE in the normal location, and a separate speaker of your choice, created as a separate "room" in the Sonos software. You would then group the room with the PLAYBAR/PLAYBASE, and the other speaker. Supposedly, there'd be a 70ms delay between the two, but you might not notice it...or it could drive you insane. For me, it would be the latter, but it's not that far of a trip for me, either. But what would be happening is that the "other room" speaker would be playing the whole TV sound in one speaker. That would be the front, center, and left speaker. So you'd get more than just the voice part of the normal 5.1 sound.

Like I say, I'm leery of this as a real solution. I think if I was serious, I'd get a PLAYBAR and a PLAY:1, with the understanding that I'd either return the PLAY:1 if it didn't work the way I wanted it to, or I'd use the PLAY:1 in another room for music purposes. Then, if it does work the way I wanted, I could potentially change the "other room" speaker to something like a PLAY:3 or PLAY:5 if I felt it worthwhile, and still use that PLAY:1 in another room.
