If the Sony TV settings allows for audio ‘pass-through’ on ‘Digital Sound Out’ over HDMI, then I would use that option instead of ‘Auto’ or ‘PCM’ - check the TV user manual for that ‘pass-through’ option availability and then set the codec on the V6 Box in ‘Home/Help & Settings/Settings/Audio’ - just choose ‘Dolby Digital’ and the TV will then not try to process the audio, but simply pass it through its ports.
If audio ‘pass through’ is not available, then see if Sony support can assist you.
Failing all, the the answer might be to consider bypassing the TV altogether, as mentioned in the thread you have linked to in your post and use an audio extractor, either the Arcana or similar device, or you could of course try PCM stereo audio for the V6 box instead by selecting its other audio-out setting of ‘Dolby Digital to PCM’ (not recommended, but it is an option).
It’s hard to imagine a cable introducing a delay of any type. It should either work, or not work. Makes me wonder if there’s additional processing going on on the Virgin box, which is delaying the signal being sent out across that cable.
With some sophisticated test equipment you may be able to measure some slight timing differences (of a few percent the speed of light in a vacuum), but on a human lip sync scale these differences are insignificant.
