I've already got a PLAYBASE and SUB, but looking to toss in a couple more speakers for a 5.1 setup. Would you recommend PLAY:1 or PLAY:3?

Play:1 or Sonos Ones. With the Sub, you don't need the added bass of the Play:3.
Makes sense. Would you put them behind the viewer for a traditional 5.1 setup, or can they be used as L/R speakers on either side of the PLAYBASE?
They can only be used as surrounds, so they need to be behind the viewer. The Playbar/Playbase is the L/R/C.

play 3 if you want to hear your music loud when not watching HT. The sonos 1 or play 1 will have the annoying auto volume adjustment cutting in and out when playing loud. It is design to limit distortion at the expense of constant volume adjustment at high volumes. At higher volumes the play3 does out do the play1. But for HT, it does not matter which one you get.

Also to take advantage of the music with the home theater setup. Set the surround speakers to full, not ambient with music.

dont put the surround speakers on the side of the playbase. It defeats purpose. They need to be behind where you sit to get the surround effect.
