I have added my sonos speaker to my google home group and it will cast music to all speakers. However the sonos sound is ahead of the other speakers in the group (annoyingly so). I have tried using the sync slider in the app but it does not make a difference. How can I fix this?

Hi. You can’t fix it because it isn’t broken. Google and Sonos are separate, competing multiroom audio systems. The two cannot be synched and I would be surprised if any effort is being directed to changing that.
