sonos1 app should be upgraded to NEW SONOs app?

I recall when Sonos 2 was introduced older products would be functional only under Sonos 1 and that Sonos 1 would not have updates.

I have been using the two without a problem, is the update of Sonos app only for Sonos 2?

Will the new Sonos update operate the functionality of both Sonos 1 and Sonos 2?
