Maybe there’s a fix. Describe the issue(s). This community has been very helpful to me when I have had questions.
The diabolical Sonos App has defeated me. I’m done. I give in. It’s completely turned my Which Best Buy Sonos speakers into little more than household ornaments!
Just checking in too see if anyone has any recommendations for a replacement system where the software aligns with the hardware?
I’ve added a WIIM amp and pro to my house, where the plan was to add Sonos Port and Amp to my already existing 10 Sonos speaker set up. No regrets with the WiiM stuff, works 100% and for my uses is an upgrade over the Sonos options. But IMO this would only make sense if the music services or other features are supported - and you aren’t looking at powered speakers. (I’m not replacing all my Sonos devices at this point.)
I have read positive posts from other posters here who also own Denon Heos, Bluesound, MusicCast.
If you search you will find some long threads in this topic that might be helpful.
I have WiiM products. They work very well. What is missing from WiiM that you have with a Sonos system:
- WiiM does not sell speakers.
- The services list is shorter.
- No queue editing ( yet ).
- No surround options ( Yet ).
So why do I own WiiM stuff??? It’s the best “bang for the buck” audio you can find. They also pay attention to feature suggestions. The app is continuously being tweaked.
The word “Yet” used in the list above is realistic when you look at the product and software progress made so far.
One big plus for me is the integration with Amazon Echo speakers. I can group WiiM with Echo for a whole house system. This cannot be done with Sonos.
Am I dumping my Sonos products? NO! The above list should explain why. Because I have a simple network setup all my Sonos speakers work OK. Do I like the app?… NO! It needs to better match what I had with the “orange” app. I’ll wait for app updates that put back what’s missing. I’m just confused as to why it’s taking so long to do something they did a long time ago with earlier versions of Sonos controller apps.

Does that mean that for each speaker you need two power cables (one for the speaker, one for WiiM) plus speaker wires to connect WiiM to the speaker?
I have a WiiM ultra plugged into my 5 line in and use the WiiM software for all my music now even though I am on the old software and my app still works
I prefer the WiiM app and it has my preferred services and I can use Sono+ app which is a widget for grouping and volume on the rest of my Sonos system as I am on the old application my system is frozen and I won’t be updating again
I decided I won’t be reliant on a one box solution again I will be replacing my 5s+sub with a class a/b amp and wired speakers and use my Sonos until they die and get replaced
as a sidenote I believe audio pro speakers can be added into the WiiM application for the whole house audio but no home theatre yet

The way I use WiiM now:
The WiiM Ultra is connected to KEF LS50 WII speakers via optical digital. The WiiM Pro Plus is connected to a Sony receiver that only has analog inputs. The Sony powers ceiling speakers. The WiiM Mini is connected to a BlueSound Pulse via optical digital. There are two Amazon Echo Gen 4 stereo pairs that are grouped with the WiiM devices for whole house audio.
WiiM does sell an amp that can be used with passive speakers. It has streaming capabilities.
A change from Sonos to WiiM would be a “sea change”. Sonos has a different approach to streaming audio at least for local library music. With WiiM be prepared to employ a server that WiiM can connect to. WiiM did recently introduce indexing a share like Sonos / BlueSound, but I have not tried that yet. Have no real need for that function as I use MinimServer in the NAS where the music resides.

Yes. I’ve heard that works well. Have a drive I’m loading with music that’s not on my NAS. I’m the world’s best procrastinator so progress is slow. I should go work for Sonos.
There is no question that the app update has been a disaster for Sonos, and for some of its customers. But the app is now being blamed for nearly every problem that users experience. As a result they don't even seek a fix, and either put up with a malfunctioning system or look to jump ship.
That is such a shame, and ultimately Sonos is responsible. But I would suggest people call Sonos Support or come onto the forum before abandoning Sonos.

Sonos, I AM DONE! I bought into your system over 10 years ago and you’ve taken a great product and turned it into crap. I have spent THOUSANDS on you over our fantastic time together and you’ve been great, until you bricked my older units. I forgave you. I spent more money on you, and with time I was able to afford the higher priced speakers. And I bought into them. And now when I go to take a shower and want to play something, spur of the moment, I spend at least 5 minutes trying to get ANYTHING to play, on a great Unifi Wifi 7 home network, before giving up in frustration. Your speakers are now nothing more than 500$ dust collectors. FIRE THE MANAGING PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. PLEASE. I will take you back if you do that. Plex has been broken for YEARS. Local Media has sucked for YEARS. There are open source solutions to what you provide. They will get better. If you don’t change, and right away, I’ll leave you forever.

Sonos has not become garbage or a nightmare jungle. My system works fine. I have just set up a new system for a friend and that was straightforward and he's thrilled with it. He's even OK with the app, although some may say he doesn't know any better.
I am not denying for a second the frustrations and anguish experienced by some users, but some sense of perspective would be good.
And when I see mention of a "great Unifi 7 network", I think "are there two DHCP servers running?". Maybe that's so and maybe it isn't, but it is where I would start looking for the problem.
And before anyone accuses me of being a Sonos fanboy, let me save you the effort. I am a Sonos fanboy.

WiiM is a good alternative with none of the app or firmware bugs currently plaguing Sonos. It’s not perfect but ime It just works like Sonos used to. Just make sure you understand the compromises as it might be better to wait it out with Sonos.

I agree. I don’t mind ranting, but please folks include details: Issues encountered, network configuration, speaker type & placement etc.
When it comes to things like the useless queue I might want to rant. Instead I will describe exactly what’s wrong with the queue in the hopes Sonos will do something about it. Of course they already know the queue needs work.
