Maximum number of Sonos devices in one system - what counts as device?

Hi there, apart all the (severe) issues and dropouts caused by the new app (that imho got better after the last update) I started losing at least one system all the time right after I finished reintegrating it. I have in total 15 “rooms”. Then I realized that I simply may have to much devices in one system (in total: 35 loudspeakers ranging from Play 1 to Arc and different Subs). However, I asked myself if every loudspeaker counts as one device: What about Subwoofer (e.g. I have two in one surround system and 4 Minis and one gen3 integrated in Stereo pairs) - do also the loudspeaker in surround sets and Subwoofer in 2.1 sets count as devices? If yes: Is it possible to create two different Sonos systems in one (the same) WiFi Network? Every hint would be helpful and much appreciated - thanks! Django

Anything with the Sonos logo on it, except for the Ace headphones, counts as a single device.  For example, an Arc + 2 surrounds + 2 Subs = 5 devices total.  The limit per system is 32 devices and 32 controllers.

Do you want to play the same source, in sync, over the whole system at once? If so, I don’t think so.

Are you following the Sonos guidance that at least 1 in every 5 of the devices should be hard-wired over Ethernet?

No, absolutely not, no device is hardwired, they are all just Wifi connected… Never was a problem until I included two more stereo pairs (and got from 31 to 35 loudspeakers). I decoupled now 3 devices completely (even resettend them) and the whole system is already much more stable. No “room” dropped since then. It looks like I just have to live with “just” 32 devices e.g. loudspeakers. I hope that the Ace is not counting as device… Because I definitely want to get one… and than I would have to ditch again one loudspeaker 🤔 😄

Ace will not count as a speaker as it is seen as a Bluetooth connection to the phone or whatever you are streaming from, they do not act in the regular Sonos way… so you will be OK from that perspective.

I don’t know what / if there is a limit, but from what you have described, it sounds like radio interference to me.

I would run a diagnostic report just after you have an issue and send the report number to Sonos support, that should give them the info they will need to advise you on the best course of action to remedy the situation.

They have been great at identifying these sorts of issue for me in the past.

Thank you all for your help! I’m pretty sure that breaking the “maximum 32 device rule” is what caused the problems in my system since the whole system is now (after ditching 3 devices and reducing by doing so the amount of total devices from 35 to exactly 32) very stable and quite reliable. Happy listening!
