Feature description:
Lock Volume is a feature that allows the owner of Sonos speakers, to lock the volume level of speakers at a specific level. This ensures that the volume of the locked speakers won’t change when adjusting the volume of all other speakers at the same time from my Iphone. For example, in a bathroom, you may want the volume to stay the same, while in your kitchen or living room, the volume levels may vary more frequently.
How to use it:
1 - Sonos owner, goes into the Sonos app.
2 - Clicks into a speaker or group.
3 - Sets the volume (30) and checks a checkbox to lock the volume at this level.
4 - When I’m streaming music to all Sonos speakers from my Iphone, I can change the volume up and down without affecting the locked speakers.
Use Case:
1) I'm having visiting guests, and they want to play music through all the speakers in the house, but I prefer to keep the bathroom at 30 and the bedroom at 50. Since I locked the volume on these speakers, the guests can adjust the volume up and down as much as they like without affecting the balance of the bathroom and bedroom.
2) When playing music through all my speakers in my home, I like to turn up the volume high but in the small bathroom I would like to always keep it low. So by locking the bathroom volume I can turn up the volume for all speakers from my music app on my Iphone without having to manually readjusts the bathroom volume.
Hi

I like this idea. Guest bathrooms, laundry rooms, hallways, etc would be common areas where I never go to listen to music/TV, but do move to temporarily when listening to TV. 90% of the time, I’m going to have a set volume I’d listen to.
I like this idea aswell, so +1 from me.
I would like this as well, but in this case it would likely be a different setting. With the Port connected to a DAC/Pre I have the volume on the Port set to 97% to avoid a loss in resolution. It would be nice to have a setting that locked that 97% volume setting or a setting that holds it at 100%. When the Port/DAC/Pre is grouped with other rooms I don’t want the digital volume changing on the Port. I control the volume of the Port system with the preamp.

if I’m understanding things here, Isn’t this possible already

Frankly that’s a terrible choice. Use Fixed Volume (at 100%). In Variable Volume mode, at 97% you’re well into the region of the Port’s soft-knee limiter, introducing unpleasant dynamic range compression effects. Fixed Volume bypasses the limiter.
Why 97% anyway? If the intention is to attenuate full scale samples slightly to try and avoid inter-sample overs in the DAC then, well, I suggest you get a better DAC.
FWIW I’m not sure exactly what happens with Fixed Volume and 97% on the ‘volume limit’ setting. Even if the soft-knee limiter is avoided the samples are all having to be rescaled, i.e. they’re no longer bit-perfect.

Others explained why that isn’t necessarily a good option for the Port, that was my thinking for other rooms. I might want a room to always stay at a current volume (or mute) at a system setting level. By that I mean you can’t change the volume of the room through the normal volume menu at all. That way the bathroom will always be at the reasonable level of 30 and I never have to adjust it because it got changed accidently or something like that.
This is slightly different than OP in that he wanted a checkbox for each room in the group volume level screen that would lock the volume from changing during group volume changes only. You could still adjust the volume for the single room through app or the speaker controls, as I understand it.

Thanks. It seems the idea is gaining some support from others too.
I would like to expand on the idea with the following:
Another thing could also be to lock the volume relative to other speakers.
I do often find myself putting the speaker in the kitchen to +20 above the level of my “Home Theater” group, because this makes it sound perfecetly balanced in my open living room combined with a kitchen. I can imagine there are many many in the same situation where they wish the volume of certain speakers always would change the same amount relative to other speakers, since some speakers may be too close to listing positions compared to some speakers that are far away from listing position when streaming to all speakers at once.
