Tunein won’t play WERS, but Sonos new radio station will.

For some reason, the sonos app often won’t play WERS with tunein,  but if I go to the same station in the new sonos radio station it plays well. If I play directly from tunein, there also are no problems.

This seems odd. Surely both sonos/tunein and Sonos radio get the stream from the same source.

Anyone have an idea of what is going on?  All other stations I’ve tried work fine.

Hi @bradbort, thanks for reaching out. Sorry to know about this issue on the specific station on TuneIn, I’ll ask some questions to further check.

  • When did it start happening that WERS 88.9 is not playing via TuneIn?
  • Have you tried it on another device controller where you have the Sonos App if it will be the same issue?
  • Are there any updates or changes made on the Sonos App or TuneIn before this occurred?
  • Is there an error message or what’s the error message that you’re getting when you’re trying to play WERS 88.9 on the Sonos App via TuneIn?

I’ll have it checked with our specialist about the specific station not working on Tunein via the Sonos app.

Let me know your thoughts on the advice above.

Thanks for getting back to me. To answer your questions:

  • We have been noticing this for a few months
  • Yes, same problem on my wife’s iphone, also same problem if we use Alexa on various amazon echos, or on a playone
  • Only if you pushed out updates. I did not make any default changes. No idea if tunein changed it’s app in that time frame. Since the station works fine when called directly from within tunein, however, I suspect something else is going on.
  • I just tried it and it worked this time, so it seems to be somewhat random. Sigh. I believe there was an error message about “unable to play at this time” or some such, but I don’t recall the exact wording.

It’s odd that it is just this one station. I’m hoping that your inquiry led someone to fix it, but I’ll check over the next week or so. It’s a station we like to play a lot! Weird that the sonos app did not have the problem when playing the exact same station.

Hmmm. Since it always works on tunein when I go through the app, but sometimes does not work when I use sonos to use tunein, there has to be some kind of intermittent handoff issue between the two services.

This is above my pay grade, but someone should take a look. I’m betting if I have issues with this one station, others may be having intermittent issues with other stations.
