I’m experiencing a weird issue with my Sonos One. My friend connected to my speaker from the Spotify app while on my wifi network. Now, she is not on my wifi network and very far from my home, but she is able to connect to the speaker and start playing on it from the Spotify app. Why is this happening? I would think that she wouldn’t be able to connect to my Sonos One if she’s not on the same wifi network.

Hi @monicavp, welcome to the Sonos Community!

This is common direct control behaviour and happens a lot. When you use Spotify’s Direct Control it starts a session with the device you connect to on the same local network, this session stays in place even when you leave the network, which can lead to the situation you’re experiencing.

There used to be an ‘End Session’ button but I’ve checked in my system and with a colleague and that button isn’t there anymore. You can still end the session, but you’ll have to start playback from another music source, such as Apple Music, Sonos Radio, Amazon Music, etc etc.

You can also break the session if the speaker that was Direct Controlled too is grouped with another speaker, if an alarm is triggered, or if a connected speaker loses its cloud connection. The nuclear option would just be to reboot the speaker, but the options above should end the session.

I hope this information helps!
