Hey,

Since my LaCie 5 Big has crashed, i installed a new NAS Synology ds218+ (2 x 4 TB).

The back up from my music has been transferred to the NAS.

When i’m trying to connect Sonos  to my music library i get this pop up window from Sonos:

Sonos can't add the music folder.
Make sure the path, username and password are correct.
Reason: An issue has occurred when adding the new music in the shared folder \xxxxx\Music\Music LaCie 5Big 10TB - Back Up to the Sonos system. Please see the following link for more information:

Have you enabled SMBv1 on the new NAS?

SMBv1 is enabled but the problem remains!!!!

Ik dacht verkeerdelijk dat SMBv1 ingeschakeld was, doch dit was niet zo!

Heb dit via “geavanceerd” in mijn Synollogy moeten veranderen!

Alles werkt prima nu!

Translation: SMBv1 was not in fact turned on, once it was it worked fine.

Surely it is totally irresponsible of Sonos to force users to enable the extremely vulnerable SMB1?

I share my NAS via PLEX rather than enabling SMB 1. Far too risky and asking for trouble.

Why they won’t enable https for Windows/NAS shares is beyond me.

Windows users do not need to use SMB at all these days, so there is no “forcing” of anyone. This is only a problem for NAS users, which is a small percentage of the small percentage of file share users.

Not entirely clear what you mean by “enable https” in this case. Usually when anyone says “surely it is no great shakes to...” they are not software engineers with experience in that space.

OK, tit for tat. The problem with software engineers is they generally have not a got a clue about security and flexibility. Enabling https is not a big deal, do not patronise me. SONOS have left me with several bricks and a requirement to re-invest with no fair warning (I understand the reasons why but still). All modern NAS will have http/https ability for sharing their content. It is not difficult to find a large amount of grievances regarding SMB 1. Simply advising non tech people to enable SMB 1 to make it work is utterly irresponsible and perhaps SONOS should look to compensate if a user is hit by an attack such as WannaCry as a direct result of their advice. In other news, I bought the stunning and expensive Sennheiser Soundbar just a couple of months before ARC came out. So you can see I’m a little frustrated. Back to https, it’s only a webpage after all that can surely be accessed and a library built. I’m very interested to hear why this cannot be the case. Other platforms can!

Please point me to a platform that supports file shares over https via some standard protocol.
