Hi,

After spending more than two hours with Sonos ‘tech support’ and being shunted to Windows 11 tech support between the two, I am frustrated by Sonos in general, and my issue remains. I have many Sonos components that work well on my Android Galaxy S22. Sonos on my PC does not load. I have uninstalled the application using Windows uninstall and also using Advanced Uninstaller Pro 13. I’ve deleted the Sonos folder at ‘Local Disk (C:)/Program Files (x86)/Sonos’ and even tried manually deleting the folder's content. After all the uninstalls, I restart my machine. Also, I ran Win11_24H2_English_x64.iso, then reinstalled Sonos for Windows from the support page - Sonos_81.1-58074.exe.

After doing this sequentially several times, I end with the same result. I have a shortcut on the desktop, a Sonos icon in my Start Menu, and a Sonos.exe file in ‘Local Disk (C:)/Program Files (x86)/Sonos’. The PC does not respond, and for the Sonos.exe, I receive an error message stating, “Windows cannot find ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\SonosV2\Sonos.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

I’ve had Sonos components since 2010, five Sonos speakers, Amplifier, Connect, and Port, but I cannot play Sonos from my PC, and Sonos hasn’t provided competent or knowledgeable support. Yesterday, I was told that my issue would be escalated, and would receive an email about when I would be contacted. That email hasn’t come.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks

Steve

I guess the obvious thing to note is the mismatch between “a Sonos.exe file in ‘Local Disk (C:)/Program Files (x86)/Sonos’” and “Windows cannot find ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\SonosV2\Sonos.exe’” which (I suppose) suggests that the shortcut contains an error? Have you tried simply executing the sonos.exe file in Local Disk (C:)/Program Files (x86)/Sonos?

Take a look at C:\ProgramData\SonosV2,_Inc\runtime\installer.log and see if there any clues.

Temporarily disable any anti-virus.

If problems persist, try my Windows app: https://www.microsoft.com/store/apps/9nblggh4x6j0

I would certainly try what @Antifon suggested which removes the potential of it being some sort of shortcut issue.

Perhaps also try to run SONOS.EXE as administrator to see if it is some sort of rights issue.
Windows 11 24H2 is unfortunately plagued with issues, but I would be surprised if the simple task you are trying to perform is caused by a 24H2 bug - but who knows.

Just FYI, although it is most likely irrelevant to your situation, one change in 24H2 that could affect those with music on a NAS is that by default Microsoft now enforce SMB signing for all connections on the network. 😧. Some older NAS or routers with USB very likely don’t support SMB signing…

Hi,

Thank you for your quick responses.

@antifon - I looked for a “c:\program files(x86)\sonos.exe” and could not find that file. The Sonos installer consistently installs “c:\Program Files(x86)\SonosV2\Sonos.exe”. The shortcut target is "C:\Program Files (x86)\SonosV2\Sonos.exe".

@Controlav - In “c:\program data\SonosV2,Inc\runtime\installer.log”, there is no log file ‘”nstaller.log”. Perhaps that is a clue? I am using MS antivirus and tried installing Sonos with and without the antivirus. I like your app. You mentioned on the app site that your app doesn’t replace the Sonos app; I did not install it because couldn’t add new music from my media drive (e:\) to the Sonos Music Library.

@rosswells127 - My music library is located on an internal HD “e:\”. I’ve had no issues with that location in the past, no NAS. ‘Run as Administrator’ does not remedy the issue.

I appreciate your time and insights, and will keep a positive spin on my Sonos system. The “silver lining” is that I have the mobile Andriod app on my phone.

Hi,

After many hours, and discussions withMS Windows ‘escalated’ tech support, I was able to diagnose a probable issue. The hypothesis was that there were remnants remaining in the registry that were not cleaned out.

First, I uninstalled Sonos application using CCleaner. I reinstalled and ran CCleaner, and the CCleaner Registry tool, and rebooted the machine. After reinstalling the Sonos app, I received an error message about the Sonos Installer 'Error 1923, Sonos Library Service could not be installed. Verify you have sufficient privileges to install system'.

I again uninstalled Sonos using CCleaner and then Registry tool. Then reinstalled Sonos and received the message 'Unable to load peir.dll'. I then uninstalled Sonos using Revo Uninstaller (Free version) and ran the CCleaner Registry tool (Pro version) and reinstalled Sonos. Then the Sonos application launched, and now works fine.

Perhaps, it was the sequential use of the third party software sequentially.

I sincerely appreciate your thoughts and insight!

Steve
