The last time I let Sonos update any of my equipment, they moved everything to S2 except the one component that would not handle S2, so I lost the ability to use some legacy equipment. it was a nuisance to move each individual component back to s1 and I do not want to have to do that again

There was a recent S1 update which is most likely what you are seeing. Updating S1 will not transfer any devices to the new Sonos app.
My Sonos S1 Connect lost the ability to access my music library after the update. Streaming services like Apple Music are fine.
