Hi all,

I’m looking for some advice please.

I’ve been using a Zyxel 310S NAS drive which has all my old CD’s saved on. This used to work brilliantly until the Sonos app was updated. I’ve been doing some reading and understand that the NAS is not compatible with SMB v2 or v3 and that it can’t be configured due to it’s age (6years old).

I’m guessing that I need to buy a new NAS and transfer everything over. Can anyone recommend a solution that isn’t too expensive.

Does your router have an USB port for file sharing? If so grab a thumb-drive, copy your music over and set the router up to share it. Then connect your Sonos to the new share.

There are several topics here discussing new small NAS devices, I’m not an expert on them so searching here might help.

The router doesn’t have a USB port. The current set up is a wired connection from the router to the LAN port on the NAS drive. So I’m guessing that if I buy a new (SMB v2 or v3) external hard drive and connect it the same way, it should work??

Yes, the normal way is to connect it via lan port. If you are going to buy a new nas, I recommend taking one that also supports plex server functionality. So if there will be issues with Sonos music library in future, you can use plex as an alternative. Plex is supported on Sonos as a service. 


Windows no longer supports SMBv1 by default. I was able to install an SMBv1 driver on a W10 system that enabled me to copy files from an old NAS. It’s an old system, not connected to anything important and we’ll soon recycle it. It’s also so slow that a hacker will probably decide that it is nonfunctional.

Bought a Synology NAS with a little research was able to connect, but Sonos has no search function for Music Library.

So, does that mean that if I replace the NAS and get it set up, the files aren’t accessed the same way via the Sonos app - ie Music Library - named folder - named artist - named track, as they are currently saved.

I, like many have had issues with the new app, but haven’t seen the Music Library setup yet.

OK, I’m not sure what Plex is, but good to be aware of that if I go down that route. Thanks.

That has changed with one of the latest updates and now you are able to search for content within your Sonos music library.

Plex is a media server solution for several platforms. You can set up your own media server and use clients on different os and devices. There are different plans, also paid subscriptions, but you also are able to use it in a free version.

And as said, Sonos has got a client integration as one of its streaming services you can add.
