Having just upgraded to the new app, I’m utterly amazed at how poor it is from a user perspective.
There is no longer a volume number indication
You cannot edit queues
You cannot add single songs to a queue as ‘play next’ or ‘add to end’
You cannot create or edit any alarms
How did this get through any UAT? These are basic features every Sonos user has enjoyed for years.
Absolutely ridiculous, please add this functionality back ASAP.

What gets me is that they keep saying they are addressing 'what customers have been asking for' but the golden rule in development is no degradation in existing functions or as A.A Milne put it 'if it ain't broke don't fix it's. Some customers will ask for any rubbish and irrelevant features (tea making facilities, pretty exploding flowers, etc) but you don't just delete a platform for this stuff.
This 'upgrade' just looks like they've knocked up some Figma screens without any server APIs or infrastructure.
Hi Neilmcg
well done on your research and succinct evaluation, I totally agree with your assessment of the situation. Which also helps explain the time delay when cancelling a play list, track or radio program, I’ve also found on occasions when changing volume levels there is a delay between the slider and the volumes actual response. This would also explain why there is a difference between the track being played and the track being listed. also I don’t recall giving permission for this third party to access my network or take control of my devices, let alone store and access my data. I can foresee major problems both with the new system and with the legalities of this change. cp85
I echo Cp85’s comments above and a big shout out to Neilmcg for the analysis. If that all turns out to be true and we lose direct access to our local devices I’ll be outraged. In so doing, Sonos will be throwing thousands if not millions of users who live in rural areas and don’t have access to inexpensive, reliable, fast internet under the bus. Sonos will become unusable for them. After investing thousands of dollars in Sonos equipment this is simply unacceptable. :/

New app is total trash. I just invested a lot of money replacing all of my older gear and am so very sorry I did. With this new app, I might as well just rip it all out and take it to my local e-waste site. System is totally worthless. Fortunately I was able to warn everyone I know who has a Sonos system and told them to not under any circumstances download this new app. It’s not a real app, merely a prop.
I sure wish I had gone to the Commnuity site prior to downloading, but I’ve never had any issues in the past and have always trusted to new apps and downloaded them. I will never again do that. The Sonos brand has been significantly damaged with the joke of an app.
@CEO - roll this thing back already. How much outrage can you withstand? Guessing you just don’t give a damn. You and the team should all be ashamed of yourselves for putting this thing out.

The wildest thing about this whole app disaster, and it is an unmitigated disaster, is that Sonos keeps PUSHING it and recommending that users download it. They are showing a complete disregard for the customers if they continue to do that in light of the absolute avalanche of issues and comments from unhappy users. Sonos needs to be held accountable for one of the worst software releases of all time.
I just came back home after a few days away, and the “upgraded” app on my phone. I get it, the old one was not the most pleasant app we could imagine. Now, I have to close and restart the app so it can find my local music library, and even when it found it, after scrolling for a long time finding the music I want to play, it does not even work for all the files. And a lot of feature are missing… I get it, a new app could be buggy at the start, but it is not buggy, it is a absolute mess! What a sh**ty upgrade.
The desktop app is still working though. I guess if the Sonos guys who have the power to make the call are not stupid, they can kill this upgrade for now and restart the old S2 until it is ready.
I guess Sonos does not really get why we buy Sonos product. If we only wanted to stream Spotify, there is no need to buy an expensive Sonos speaker, a basic bluetooth one will do the trick. I want to have control over the data I own. If I cannot easily use my local library with the music I have encoded over the years, Sonos is absolutely no use for me. And if they want to become a service company and if an internet connexion will now be needed to play a local MP3, I am gone too.
Sonos, can you be sensible and make a reasonnable decision?
I now have one of my selection of speakers that’s disappeared from the app. I can still see and control it via Lyd on my Apple Watch but not using the updated controller.
If I group it with any of the others, my entire collection of Sonos speakers disappear!
If I attempt to reconnect the errant speaker the app stops and asks me to turn on “local network”, which is already on and I can’t get any further even after restarting everything including rebooting my phone
It’s a bullish!t response. No apology and no making the old app available.
Wasn’t worth the time.
Why should anyone care that it was "build from the ground up" as if that's any good reason to deliver an app with many of it's core functions missing?
And the time line makes it even more curious to why they didn't just wait a month with the whole release.
They don’t give a flying f**k about their customers. All that interests the exec board is the share price. As that isn’t being negatively affected by their incompetence, they will just ignore the customer base and continue to shaft them with this sh!tty release.
Worse and worse by the hour. I’m with Neilmcg in that I think those of us who primarily use Sonos to access our own locally stored libraries will find that we can no longer do so as Sonos tries to force us into a subscription model. I have NAS with 113gB of stored music which is my primary use of Sonos, a lot of what I have in this library is not available through streaming services. Thirty five minutes ago I pressed play on episode 1 of the Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy (original BBC cds loaded to NAS) and the play button is still spinning with nothing playing.
I’m seriously considering buying a Brennan again since the new ones now connect to Sonos speakers but at the back of my mind is that Sonos will probably add something in the background to prevent connection to third party devices, they’ve already disconnected me from my primary source of listening so I’ve no doubt they’d have no compunction in shafting me on as many other fronts as the can manage.
The sheer affront of Sonos’ attitude to users is astonishing; it is insulting, contemptuous, high handed.. how dare they dictate to me how I access my own library curated over 20+ years and tailored to my tastes and moods and try to force me into what they tell me I “want”! I can’t recall feeling so impotent in the face of ignorance and intransigence for many years, the brick wall of silence from Sonos in the face of an avalanche of opprobrium from disgusted users is morally reprehensible. Shame on them!
After deleting the latest Android BAD Sonos version and restored the last good version for Android, could I expect my playlists files to also be restored?

When I switched my Android app back to the previous S2 version everything came back, including playlists, just like before. I now have to disable automatic app updates so as to prevent the new one from being reinstalled. That’s a bit of a nuisance but far more acceptable than having a crippled Sonos system.
I concur. I have been a Sonos user for more than 15 years and rely on the functions you’ve eliminated. Please reinstate them.
Lost the use of one speaker randomly, in desperation I tried reinstalling the iPhone app and no it doesn’t work at all!
Keeps asking for network access, which is switched on but the app doesn’t recognise this and won’t let me connect to anything!
as a user, I do not have answer and I agree with the author of this thread,
I noticed too that sonos playlists are no longer available into the new S2 version. or I have not found.
someone can help?
Make sure to attend new app AMA:
Hey everyone! We have some exciting news to share with you all.
Today is when the new app update with the new design is released, and will be rolled out to all of you during the next few days. But some of you might have questions when you have had a week to get to know the new Sonos App interface. Because of that, we want to give you all a chance to ask some of the people who were integral in its creation and design, the questions that have come to mind while you have used the app.
We are therefore happy to announce our first live Community AMA!
Our panelists will be:
Diane Roberts, Senior Director of Software Development
Kate Wojogbe, Senior Director of User Experience
Tucker Severson, Director of Product Management
It will be hosted on the 14th of May from 11:00 until 14:00 GMT -07.
If you look at the right side of this page, you can see the when the AMA happens, in your local time.
You can also use the “Add to Calendar” button, to ensure you get a reminder in your own calendar, before the event starts!
An app update was released today that allows for ‘Adding and Editing Alarms’.
However, once you’ve updated the app it doesn’t tell you that you also need to do a system update. You have to go into the system update checker and manually force it to check for an update.
You couldn’t make this up, they can’t do anything right!!
OK I'm going to try to stay constructive... 15th May got an update to the Roam and it now connects fine.
Also, response to switching a speaker off or changing volume via the app is now instant.
Let's hope these improvements keep coming Sonos.

Are these Improvements or the Initial Restoration of Previous Functionality?
Mine barely even loads. So many ‘unable to load content’ or ‘something went wrong’ massively unhelpful error messages when searching Spotify or just on home page. Today it randomly switched to Dutch as well. I’m English in the uk.
i also cannot add/remove speakers to a playing song. Just doesn’t.
Even worse, if a song is playing on one speaker, I cannot play something else on another one. I just can’t find a way. It always changes what is playing on the original speaker.
Truly awful and very disappointing. Even basic use is not possible.
Wait, sorry, my bad… I now see that to select a different speaker, I must ignore the speaker options at the bottom and tap on the ‘Your system’ title that has an already expanded drop-down arrow next to it?! Not as intuitive as I’d have hoped, but at least I can do it now!
The Sonos App for me was always the downside of Sonos products. Slow, laggy and far away from perfect. But at least it worked most of the time. The new app is a disaster:
I reset both of my Play3s because they did not work with the new app. Now I can’t add them to my system again. One Play3 setup works. I had to connect the Play3 directly to my router. But it gets lost or is not stored in my system. For the other Play3 the setup always aborts. My system is not usable right now.
Thank you Sonos.
My fifth set of “what’s the latest bo**ocks this atrocious ‘upgrade’ has caused” post.
Access to music services poor; BBC Sounds no longer displays the synopsis information and I’m sure that’s a Sonos not BBC issue, other services slow. My 113gB NAS library is now an utter lottery as to whether a file will play or not, massive swathes of spoken word content in particular inaccessible.
Hardware control almost completely kyboshed, group volume changes each speaker in a group at random not all in unison. Response to any input at the UI, change volume, skip a track etc is glacially slow. In a hope over experience moment last night I allowed the next update and now can’t connect to two of my seven speakers. Every time you close the app and reopen it you wait minutes for it to show whether anything is playing so if you want to mute for a moment for a phone call or conversation you might as well get up and use the speaker button.
It’s an unmitigated disaster from all perspectives.
