Since downloading the new app in May, I can no longer listen to a music source through AirPlay in different rooms using a mixture of Sonos airplay and non-AirPlay enabled speakers.  For background:

  • I can still group all my speakers, new and old a listen to music direct from the Sonos app.
  • But if I want to listen to an external source (eg BBC Sounds), I used to AirPlay from the BBC Sounds app to my Sonos Playbase and then group the Playbase to two other older Sonos Play: 1s.  I could then listen to the BBC app on all three speakers.
  • If I try to do this now, the audio only plays on the Playbase.  Even though the three speakers still show as grouped (yellow ticks) on the app only the Playbase has the moving audio bars icon.
  • I can still group the speakers and listen to airplay through the group if I use the Sonos app on my PC which I haven’t updated so I know it’s the new app and not a problem with my setup.
  • I have a single router and two Ethernet access points connected directly to that router to extend the signal around the house.

Does anybody know if this is going to be fixed in a future update or if there is a workaround to help me?

Thanks

Hello Sonos community.

Can anybody shed any light on my query above.  Perhaps I am the only Sonos user who was grouping non-airplay Sonos speakers with an airplay speaker to get audio on the non-airplay speakers but it was something I used to be able to do (and can still do using the app on my PC which I have not updated).  I keep receiving emails from Sonos with the joyous news that the app can now perform even more of the functions that it used do perfectly satisfactorily but no mention of my particular issue.  Does anybody know?  I am reluctant to ditch my non-airplay Sonos speakers when they still work well in every other respect.  Thanks.

What did Sonos support say when you asked them?

I haven’t asked them because the messaging around the new app was “We’re aware of all the problems and working to fix them so no point in raising issues with us because we know about them”.  I imagined they are aware of this problem?

Hi @Gimblett

Welcome to the Sonos Community! And, apologies for the lack of response.

We are aware of this issue affecting AirPlay speakers when attempting to play AirPlay to a group - we are investigating, but have no ETA for when a fix might be made available.

I’ll update this thread when the issue has been resolved with a future update.

There are no workarounds available at present.

I hope this helps.

Great.  Thank you.  Look forward to hearing when a fix has been applied.
