Hello - I have a Sonos network in my main home and am now trying to add a Ray to my holiday home which hasn't got a Sonos network yet. Ive gone through the setup process and it connects to wifi network in holiday home but when it says check for updates, I immediately get the error 1101 saying unable to check for updates. The app then seems to lose the Ray and I have to go through the process again.

Tried a few things and the wifi is strong so not sure why this is happening. Any ideas welcome. thanks

Not sure if you’ve needed to log in with email and password? But use a different email address and password for your holiday home setup if you can so it doesn’t get confused about your systems.

Edit: someone in another thread with error 1000 installed the Windows Sonos app as they were having similar trouble, and that solved it…

I am experiencing the same exact issue. I have factory resetted my router and the ray many times, redownloaded the app.

I am trying to create a new system as this is my first sonos.

Same problem here - have tried everything I can think of and it isn’t allowing me to add the Ray. New account that I have just created as I’m new to Sonos. Ray is only Sonos item in my house. Driving me crazy and wasted so much time on it already. Sonos status shows everything as available.

Had the same error.

I was able to perform/finish the update using the Windows desktop app. After installing the Windows app, I was immediately prompted to update. This was immediately successful.

I was then able to add the speaker in the mobile app and assign it to a room.

I just tried the same with the macOS app - with success! Updated the device with the macOS app, reset the device, then added with the app.

MacOSx app also worked for me - thanks vm @Anna_Log

Did I not say that earlier…!?

Same here. Brand new Sonos. My first Sonos device ever.

Probably the worst new product experience I’ve had. I’m an IT developer, and I don’t like spending hours debugging my new speaker after work. It essentially becomes an expensive brick when the app doesn’t work properly.

iPhone app was simply incapable of setting up the Ray. macOS app eventually did the trick.

Does that mean, if I don’t own a computer I can not set it up?

I had to do the following for a new Sonos Ray:

  • Download IOS and setup Sonos Ray until 1101 Error appears
  • Download MacOs app and connect to the exisiting system through the wifi
  • Update the Sonos Ray through the MacOs app
  • At that point it works to control the Sonos Ray through the MacOs app
  • Reset IOS App (through App Settings → reset app) and connect to exisiting system
  • It will recognize the Sonos through your wifi network and you can control it through the phone
