Prior to purchasing Sonos products I was using Apple Airport Express to wirelessly connect to compact stereos around the house.  Is it possible to connect to the Airport Express with the Sonos app?

Not sure what your intention is in detail. One thing @Airgetlam just explained, but if you want to group Sonos rooms with an airport express to use content played via Sonos, that isn’t possible. You just can use Airplay ready Sonos devices and other Airplay receivers like the express as synced  rooms for Airplay sources e. g. from an iPhone.

With the Sonos controller? Not directly. However, if I recall correctly, the Apple AirPort Express hardware(if there is such a thing?) has a line level output via RCA or headphone jack? That would easily be fed to a Sonos analog line in open a Sonos device that has one, and you could use that to get the data into the Sonos ecosystem.
