I desperately need some guidance with this research because I'm at my wit's end.

I simply need a tangible remote control—not an iPad or phone—that I can use to adjust the level on a selection of Sonos speakers or on ALL of them.

No more Tradfri gateways are available, so you'll have to wait till their new hub is ready, however it looks like their Tradfri remote may manage a number of devices (or all speakers). I have the remote but no hub yet.

pico remote and lutron hub just went down this rabbit hole and there is no Sonos "group" support; you can only operate ONE speaker at a time.

Whilst you don’t want to use a phone or tablet do look at “Kiosk mode” as that would turn a device into a dedicated controller.

 

Bluesound hardware has an IR receiver in all their device and brilliant remote called the RC1, just wish Sonos did something similar but Wi-Fi based.

The Tradfri/Symfonisk remote does indeed control the group volume. IKEA’s new Dirigera hub is supposed to launch next month, with compatibility for existing remotes.

in the meantime you could always use Sonos Voice Control, or indeed a defined Alexa group. Both would operate at the group volume level.

The iPort xPress keypad could control group volume, but appears to be discontinued. Expensive anyway.

A cheap Amazon Fire Tablet is a good alternative and Flic are about to drop a product called the Twist which will also work with Sonos.
