I am confused about how to stream audio from my MacBook Pro to my new Sonos Arc.

any advice?

You don’t stream music from your Mac to a Sonos device. You set up the Mac as a source for the Sonos device to ‘get’ the music. See the FAQ here. 
 

The other option would be to use AirPlay 2 to ‘send’ the output from the Mac to the Arc, see the FAQ here.
