I have an LG TV with an LG magic remote. How do I sync the remote with the Play 5 so that I can control the volume from the remote and not just my phone?

I don't think you can. The PLAY:5 does not have any sensors other than wifi. The PLAYBAR/PLAYBASE pair do, which is why you can fool the LG magic remote to send it commands using IR, which is an option on that remote.
