Sonos App Connection Issues

I have noticed that the app on my phone, my wife's phone, the iPad and even the iMac has intermittent connection issues. Sometime it discovers the Sonos system and sometimes it does not. I discovered this today when I was trying to add two new Play1 speakers that I just received. To date I have not be able to add the play1's to the system. I have tried the following:

1.) Reboot router
2.) Power down router
3.) Delete app and reinstall

Pretty frustrated at this point.

Hi Keith,

I did some searching and found that the issue was caused by a feature on my router. I have an Asus rt-ac88U and it has a feature called 'airtime fairness' that apparently causes issues with the Sonos hardware / application. Disabling 'airtime fairness' fixed the app connectivity issue and let me add the new Play1's to my system.

Question for the Sonos team; it seems like 'airtime fairness' is becoming more and more common with newer routers, is Sonos aware of the issue and if yes will there be a fix coming with the next iteration of the software?

I appreciate the help.

Hi there, agrillo04. Thanks for posting and welcome to the Community. If your controllers are having connection problems and you are additionally having problems adding new speakers to your system, sounds like we should probably take a closer look at your local network. What is the make and model of the router you are using? Do you have any wireless extenders or access points? Do you happen to have any Sonos devices plugged into the router directly via Ethernet cable?

Thanks in advance.

Airtime fairness is something we are certainly aware of and is one of the first things technicians check for when working with ASUS and Netgear routers in particular. There are no plans for an update to address Airtime Fairness features on routers, but I am happy to forward your interest as a feature request.
