I am sure all our issues has been discussed before but a search for anything around ‘volume’, ‘controls’, ‘slider’ or ‘app’ comes back with 100’s of results.

Our Sonos products:

- 3 Play one

- 1 Sub

- Newest/Latest Sonos app (iOS) S2

- Sonos multi room/group (2 rooms/groups with same music but different volumes)

- Spotify Premium Family account

- Superior glassfiber internet (1.000 Mb up/down)

- Stable WiFi 6 router and access points (Fritzbox). Many smart devices, all working correctly.

We tried a Sonos cable connection and WiFi connection. The Sonos cable connection is even worse.

- Good WiFi reception on all Sonos speakers

- Apple iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro to operate the Sonos app.

We have been using Sonos for 8 years now. At the first 7 years we were very enthusiastic about it. The last 12 months we hardly ever use Sonos anymore. The app updates we had to suffer are absolutely horrible!!!! Downgrading is impossible… 😔

Most of the time we listen to music via Sonos for 15 minutes or so and then get so frustrated that we get our single WiFi speaker from B&O or Bose (whatever the kids don’t use at that moment) to enjoy music.

We have reached the point that we are ashamed that we once used to promote the Sonos service to friends and family. The kids have given up hope and no longer use Sonos for several months now.

1. The main problem is the (new) app, the selection of music from Spotify, the RESPONSE TIME to pause, next track, volume up/down, change playlists. After 15-30 seconds the Sonos system responds or partially responds (1 of 3 speakers)

2. We mostly use our Sonos at lower volumes.  4-10 at the max. Although we don’t have big hands/fingers it is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE TO ADJUST THE VOLUME from 6 to 5 or 4. We are supposed to slide 0,05 mm on a slider with a size of 0,7 mm. How?!? Who designed this?!? Why don’t you extend the slider on left side so we can tap on it to adjust the volume by one number/step at the time ? Or make a + and - button to achieve this. We used to use the buttons on the iPhone but they no longer work for quite some time now (and I know why).

3. THE VOLUME HAS A MIND OF HIS OWN. When trying to adjust the volume (see point 2) most of the time the volume continues to change for 1 minute up and down (and on 1 or 2 of the 3 speakers and sub. Crazy!!

4. The music often changes from VOLUME CHANGES EVERY NOW AND THEN. So when playing a song the first part is okay and then it decreases the increases the volume. Even Ik ben nu op de fiets we have not changed the volume for minutes.

5. SPEAKERS SPONTANEOUSLY STOP AND CONTINUE PLAYING. Also the music suddenly stutters on 1 or 2 speakers or all 3.

6. SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE AT START UP APP/LOADING.
When you open the app. The app is frozen and is loading. The message system unavailable appears for a few seconds. This also happens when looking into the settings or adjusting volume/playlists while it is use. Besides this when changing the settings or volume you must make your change within a second or so or else the page is closed and you return to the previous screen.

when changing the song, the song that you played before (mostly several songs back) is showing for at least 15 seconds. You have to wait till the correct song is showing up…

This is a ultimate effort to report the pure basic utilities of Sonos that don’t function anymore.

Please stop adding useless features to the app when the basics are still inferior.

Despite the letter from the CEO of Sonos with his apologies for the new app we have been very patient but nothing changes. I expect that we wait till the end of 2024 and if nothing has changed for the better that at New Year’s Eve we blow up our Sonos so we get released from the suffering and burdens that Sonos has brought to our doorstep with the new app!!!

I think most of your issues are best addressed by calling Sonos Support.  They can remote access your system to see what is really going on, and/or get you to submit system diagnostics.  My system has none of the lags you talk about and you shouldn’t have to suffer them.

On the volume controls the easiest way to get from 5 to 4 (say) is to slide to zero and tap 4 times on the volume bar.

To gain greater control of volume generally, set a volume limit in the speaker’s settings.  Unfortunately, this doesn’t lower the minimum volume achievable.

I hope that helps.

Edit: actually I tell I lie, the easiest way to change volume from 5 to 4 is to have SVC installed and say “Hey Sonos, set volume to 4” or 'Hey Sonos, reduce volume by 1"

To claim small changes are “impossible” is certainly not right.

I tend to use a kind of touch-and-hold-and-roll action on the volume slider button, and watch the number change.

A tap on the slider bar (if there’s space for your finger without touching mute) will also increase/decrease volume by 1.

Thank you for your help!

We could give it a shot to call support but the Sonos system is out of warranty. But we will see.

Our Sonos has no microphones (on purpose) as we value our privacy and we don’t want Sonos to start playing music during a conversation etc..

We use Sonos with multiple rooms/groups with different volumes for a balanced sound, so changing the overall volume to 0 and then tap 4 times is not an option unfortunately as all speakers change to 0 and then 4, while a room/group should have 4 and the other room/group should have 8 then.

I will try if Siri can adjust the Sonos volume.

Any other suggestions are appreciated!

I don’t have time before lunch to cover how wrong you are on almost every point.  Maybe I’ll come back later.

@ nick9669a,

sorry but it is true. It is impossible. Try it yourself to change the volume from 5 to 4. There is simply no space on the slider!

press and hold is possible but then the volume changes so many times (try it) that we suffer all the volume changes (kind of slow motion effect) that it meets along the way. It’s ridiculous but true.

So I’ll accept that you find it impossible. But I and many others find it possible.

Sonos telephone support does not end with the warranty

Sonos Voice Control does not send information back to the internet, unlike Alexa or Google Assistant.  It is purely a complementary means of controlling your system.  But as you have bought gear without microphones, that functionaity is not available to you.  What’s the bit about Sonos starting to play in the middle of a conversation?  Where has that idea come from?

We use Sonos with multiple rooms/groups with different volumes for a balanced sound, so changing the overall volume to 0 and then tap 4 times is not an option unfortunately as all

It’s just another way of adjusting the volume on any slider whether for a group or an individual speaker within a group.  Nobody said anything about lowering the whole system volume to zero. I’m sorry if this wasn’t made clear.  Perhaps the video linked above (if it works) will help clarify.

I will try if Siri can adjust the Sonos volume.

Any other suggestions are appreciated!

John B,

Thank you for your help.I don't think you quite understand us and the problems that we experience.

Thanks for the video. I completely agree with you that that is the way a volume slider should work. Although I have no sound with the video, I assume that your speakers change simultaneously with the slider. I would never bother using so much text if it worked that way for us. You have to believe me that what you are doing is really impossible for us. When we operate the slider, it goes left and right, stops several times, then continues. And the 3 speakers and sub will play different volumes independently of each other (like some kind of slow motion/delay). After about 20 seconds the sound has stabilized, but then we and our visitors are astonished to the ceiling. So you think twice before adjusting the volumes or putting on a different song. That is why we have been so disappointed in Sonos the recent months.

Your answer helped me after all! While searching for videos of people with the same experience I came across this https://www.reddit.com/r/sonos/s/Ceiv9OehFY

They claim it is due to the low hardware specifications of the Play 1 that are required to use the S2 app. This is probably why you don't recognize our experience.

If this is indeed the case (sounds logical), then it is very unfortunate that Sonos does not protect us against/explain this to us and keeps us in uncertainty for months about improvements in the new app. I think it would be best to sell my Sonos devices and buy separate quality WiFi speakers (without microphones). My confidence in Sonos that I will not have to replace all the devices again in a few months/years is completely gone.

Thank you again for your responses and hopefully have fun with your Sonos equipment.

Interesting find on the Play 1, I have a couple as surrounds and I'll have to play with this and see if i notice a difference.

Thanks

I have just tried with a Play:1 on my system and it behaved identically.  Having trouble posting the links for some reason but will try again later.

Hi @FamSloof .  I do not doubt for a second that the lag issues you are experiencing make your system virtually unusable.  It must be infuriating.  I am simply demonstrating that your experience is not the Sonos norm.  I think you should call Sonos Support.  But obviously it’s your choice

I think this clip from a Play:1 on my S2 system has sound.

“They claim it is due to the low hardware specifications of the Play 1 that are required to use the S2 app. This is probably why you don't recognize our experience.”

This is absolute  nonsense.
