I would love to have a widget in the lock screen so I can change the volume and skip tracks when my phone is locked! I used to use a competitor system before I got Sonos which had this and it was so useful!!

It seems really long winded and not easy to change tracks or adjust the volume when my phone is locked! I have to unlock it then open up the Sonos app again which is a real pain, it should be so easy.

Sonos is all about simplicity so I don't understand why no one at Sonos has come up with a solution!
I can do that on my Samsung phone. With the screen off repeated taps of the volume button control the volume of the selected zone (or group). With the screen on but locked a tap of the volume button brings up a slider volume control. Also with the screen on but locked I have a small control bar with pause/stop and skip available, as well as a close app button.
Looks like they have done it for android then and not us apple users 😞
Another reason Android wins! :8
I use a third party widget for that called Sonobit. https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/app/sonobit-remote-for-sonos/id1023126989?mt=8. It is awesome! You don't have to unlock your phone. Just swipe down to access the Today view and control your Sonos system. It actually also has an Apple Watch app! Just love it!
or Zoneplay which has Apple Music integration too !

see http://tinyurl.com/hhvs9h6 for demo of how to 'Play in zone' direct from Apple Music
SonoControls is another option: https://itunes.apple.com/app/sonocontrols-controller-widget-for-sonos/id1082647737

Disclaimer: I'm the developer of SonoControls. Both apps will do what you are looking for, they are just a bit different in approach and layout.
Unless I am missing something, there is lock screen controls on iOS? Has been for quite a while. I use them daily.

Have you examined maybe fixing the 65K limitation with your work?

Come on, that's not controller-related, is it? ;)

You could use a Plex setup or alternatively a RaspberryPi in order to set up a small home server which can handle more than the mentioned 65.000 or so tracks.
:D

Looked into them, along with the third (who's name evades me at the moment) and all require internet connectivity. They wont work for me because WIFI is often not an option when I take Sonos on the road in the RV.
Good point. I figured the same with certain voice-control assistants lately. We're getting slightly off topic though. :8
