So say I use hi res tidal or Qobuz on sonos connect (s2 capable) and use the digital out to an external DAC will I get hi res audio?

No. Sonos does not play music as hires (24 bit) from streaming services, only local files. I imagine there is a good chance that is on the road map, but Sonos has not said or implied that, to the best of my knowledge.

To be clear, Sonos doesn’t support Tidal’s MQA. I fervently hope that they never do.
