I am running the S1 and have most a fair amount of gen 2 components but am still running a gen1 amp, so I am using s1. I tried to add a new play bar but am being blocked until I upgrade my system. In reading other threads I upgraded to iOS 14.3 and have restarted my router and each Sonos component. I still cannot perform a system upgrade.
Are you trying to add a PLAYBAR or an Arc? Is the device new, or is it a previously used device?
When you restarted your router, were all Sonos devices unplugged?
I was adding a playbar. The playbar is new and has not been set up before. I unplugged the router and restarted but did not have all the sonos speakers unplugged when I restarted. When I first tried to add the playbar I was prompted to update and it seemed that the system upgrade was moving forward but failed at the last step. After the first upgrade attempt, the system could not even find the upgrade. It was at this point that I used graded iOS and reset the speakers
Ummm. So, lots of issues to work through.
First, let’s ignore the PLAYBAR completely, and get the rest of your system working. Then we can move on to the PLAYBAR. Reducing the number of moving parts will be a good thing.
What Sonos devices do you have in your system, and how are they connected to your LAN? You’re still using the S1 controller, correct?
Just out of curiosity, where did you find a new PLAYBAR? They’ve been out of production for a while.
The rest of the system is working and has not had any issues. The issue popped up when I tried to add the Playbar. I cannot add the new device without the update. (PS, Costco is still selling the Playbar. It is $499 and includes the wall mount)
I am running a play 5, play 3, play 1 (2), Playbar, sub and 2 play 1s, and then a couple of connects and one amp
mmcd,
Maybe try this…
Cable the Connect:Amp to the router and power off the other speakers (just temporary). Open the S1 App and when the Amp appears in the Sonos App, check for any S1 updates.
If you have accidentally installed the (gold) S2 App, then uninstall it.
Also note the information at the top of this link: https://status.sonos.com
Wire the Playbar to the Amp and power on, when it’s status LED is flashing green, try the setup again via ‘Add Product’ in “Settings/System”. If you don’t see a flashing green status LED then factory reset the Playbar and try again.
If/when Playbar setup is successful, then power on the other devices. Just install S1 updates only - don’t update ‘compatible’ devices to S2 - that will only ‘split’ your system. It may not be applicable, but if you do (or have done) that accidentally, you can still downgrade them by Factory resetting and adding them back to the S1 App.
Ok, let’s try to make this as simple as possible. Unplug all of your S2 devices from power, so they don’t ‘exist’ in your network, and can’t interfere with the S1 setup process.
You do have some other S1 products, correct? Ah, you do, a CONNECT:AMP, which you have said is running S1.
Open the S1 controller, and check to be sure there are no updates to the S1 system, either the controller, or your CONNECT:AMP. You should see the CONNECT:AMP. Once that system is updated (if necessary) and not upgraded to S2, use the ‘add a device’ to start the process of adding your PLAYBAR.
Since we don’t know what state the PLAYBAR is in at this point, having failed in the process before, it would be safest to perform a factory reset of the device, before using the ‘add a device’ in the S1 controller. It should be added properly this time.
After you’ve completed the add, you can then go back and plug back in the S2 devices, and they should work as before.
Note that the PLAYBAR does run S2 as well, there’s no hardware reason it needs to be on S1, unless you’re using that older CONNECT:AMP to drive rear surround speakers for it, but I suppose that is neither here nor there.
This should work… although I’m at a loss as to explain why it wasn’t working before. All I’ve done is reduce outside potential variables from the equation.
That’s a pretty impressive price from Costco, especially as it includes a mount. I wonder how many they have lying around in their various stores.
Ah sorry Bruce - I didn’t realise you were replying to this one (sorry about that). it seems the steps suggested are almost the same however.
Huh. I guess I type slowly.
Huh. I guess I type slowly.
I just happened to have a similar reply, so I copied, adjusted & pasted it and hoped to save you a bit of typing.. anyhow I’m sorryI poked my nose in on this one...my bad.
Lol, no worries, sir. I was eating dinner whilst typing, so I may have been slower than normal. It would have bothered me if we’d come up with different answers, as I’d need to figure out what I missed, but since we’re in line, it’s all good. Wish I could understand exactly what is going on, though….I can’t think of any reason why an S2 existing system would block adding a device to a parallel S1 system.
My initial thoughts were ‘perhaps’ the playbar had an old version of the firmware and maybe needed an update that it could only get when wired to a router, rather than over the air… er … maybe?
Thank you so much for all for all of your time and very detailed instructions. I will unplug the S2 devices tonight after work and try to run the update.
All, thank you so much for taking the time from your days to assist me. I am up and running and was able to add the Playbar. In the end I needed to hard wire the Sonos to my router, creating the mesh network and then run the updates. I thank you all again and wish you and your families a Happy New Year and blessings in 2021
