A few users have asked after an SSD-only NAS and I’ve commented that such a thing does not exist in the consumer space. I was mistaken. Voilà, the Asustor Flashstor 5 model FS6706T!

Barebones unit is $450 and accepts up to six SSDs. Add 4TB M.2 PCIe 3 SSDs for about $225 a pop.

I suspect we’ll start to see more appearing, especially in the consumer market where people seem to want nvme in everything, even though cost per GB still heavily favours hard drives for capacity.

14Tb Ironwolf pro for ~£205 vs 12Tb Exos for ~£205 vs 4Tb nvme starting at ~£200 and rapidly going up

At least if it is mainly used for read, the cheaper drives with lower write cycles can be expected to last a long time.

I very nearly bought one the CWWK X86-P5 “dev” boards with it’s 4nvme drive add-on to tinker with but as I already had their AMD 7840HS/dual nvme/9 sata/4 eth port boards to use as a storage and container server, so decided against it because it would end up doing nothing 😂

Hi @sigh, let’s hope you are correct and we will see creative M.2 SSD-only NAS solutions. Many people are copacetic with 4-8TB of local storage, and a small fanless enclosure would appeal.

Favor to ask! I like reading your posts, would you consider changing your avatar to something less anonymous? Even an ‘S’ on a non-pastel background would help it stand out.

Qnap also have a 4 nvme drive at the bottom of the SMB range, which also supports Plex Media Server.

An alternative that would pair with a mini/tiny pc with thunderbolt 3 would be the OWC, but it doesn’t explicitly list Linux support.

I suspect the main sticking point for mass consumer market is the nvme drive prices and they can keep the system price higher targeting small business. At the moment 2Tb seems to be the price sweet spot for consumers but once the prices shift down a bit I’d expect Qnap are in a position to get something to market quickly.

Between the PS5 and PC gamers, I do wonder how many nvme drives are just lying around in drawers these days after being replaced. I doubt they’re all ending up in usb-c enclosures.

Small and fanless/quiet is always good 🙂

The only thing I have left making a noticeable noise is my old server. It isn’t loud by computer standards, but going open-air and giant Noctua D15 on my gaming pc and new server the old server is noisy. 😂

The TBS-464 looks impressive, not sure how I missed it! I completely agree that SSD-only solutions become more attractive over time, especially as they hum at full speed with ‘legacy’ PCIe 3 M.2 drives.

Love the new @sigh avatar, btw! 💪

Coincidence of timing, I got a promo email from Zima today for their member sale.

I’d forgotten all about them, but if you want a hybrid 6hdd & 4 nvme box with pcie expansion, Intel nics and x86 install what you want as an OS if you don’t like theirs, they have the ZimaCube in a few processor/memory configs. Obviously a bigger box, but offers more flexibility.

I snagged 3 of their Zimaboards when they first started out, which I use for playing around with a silent 3 physical node k8s cluster.

An expensive computer that only allows adding one 2.5” storage drive is a far cry from multi drive nas/storage devices.

Is the built for music what they claim as justification for their £356 0.75m usb cable as well? 😂

And £3,156 for an 12th gen i9 based computer that takes one storage drive? 🤣😂
