The OS on this mobile device is no longer support

Hi, we have two ipads controlling newer sonos products - the ipads are not new but are purely used for Sonos. Yesterday both of them came up with the message

“The OS on this mobile device is no longer supported”

The sonos app can no longer recieve updated. To fix this, update the Os on the mobile device or use a device with a newer OS.

Do we have to replace two perfectly fine Ipads to continue using the Sonos app? They are fully up to date (OS 12.9.5 i believe). As mentioned they are purely for the sonos across two of our  wedding venues (new SONOS products that are expensive). To get rid of two perfectly fine ipads seems very un eco and not right. Is there a way around this?

Unfortunately, you need to replace your iPads. With the latest Sonos update, the Sonos system requirement is now iPadOS 14 or higher. And with iPad OS 12, you will NOT be able to control commonly-used features anymore.

I guess it’s a case that Apple have stopped supporting your devices, a while ago now, and so they may present a potential for security issues, as Apple are no longer providing updates for any new security vulnerabilities.

You may find that over time other Apps on the Apple Store may not be available for your devices too.

The current Apple iPadOS is now at v15.6.

Here are the current Sonos App Requirements:

Since the latest iPad OS version is 15.6 your iPad cannot be considered up to date. Sonos cannot cater for all iOS versions, so your OS does not seem to be supported anymore. There’s no solution, other than buy another, more recent, iOS device.

The iPads should continue to work, in a restricted fashion, for S2.

Unrelated to SONOS, I had to recycle a perfectly functional cellphone because the cell towers will soon stop making connections with that phone,

With respect to Apple, they will make some changes in the API that 3rd parties must use. Sometimes these changes will not run on the older iOS products. If the 3rd party does not migrate to the new API, the App will be dropped from the store. Sometimes the 3rd party could get around some of this by removing a feature requiring the new API, but this will usually result in removal of a feature that customers demand. In this case the 3rd party must chose between satisfying old customers and discouraging new and current customers. I realize that SONOS does not charge for their App, but failure to update the controller would result in iOS support disappearing from the Apple store and only existing customers who already had the iOS controller installed, and deliberately do not update, could use an Apple product to control their SONOS system.

Use SonoPad from the Store, it works on truly ancient versions of iOS.
