Hello.

I use the app S1 on one floor (mix of older and newer Sonos products working through Bridge) and the app S2 for two Sonos One (Gen 2) on the other floor.

On my account on the website I can see all Sonos products.

But after technicians solved a Wifi problem problem I had, I can still see and use the products through the app S1 but S2 and the associated two Sonos One cannot be found anymore.

I tried rebooting. I tried connecting to Ethernet. I moved them to different rooms, near other Sonos products, near to the router… but I will not touch the router.

Anybody knows what the problem might be?

Thanks

Christina.

Did the router problem result in a change of network name or password?

Try uninstalling the S2 app.  Reinstall the S2 app and choose connect to existing system.  It should ask you to press a button on a speaker - obviously press on one of the S2 speakers.

If no sign of the S2 system, wire one of those speakers to your router and try again.

For an extra degree of safety, although I don’t think it is really necessary, power off your Bridge and S1 system before you start.

Please post back whether that works or not.

Thank you, John.

No. The router has the same name and the same password as before.

I uninstalled the S2 app, reinstalled. I chose to connect to existing system but it finds only the system that runs under the S1 app. In fact, as soon as it finds that “wrong” system, it tells me to switch to the Sonos S1 Controller or to configure a new system under S2.

I tried to do the same connecting directly to the router.

I honestly don’t want to disconnect the Bridge because I do not want to risk that I will miss also on the other components.

The two new Sonos Ones are invisibile. I even tried to add them to the existing system but they cannot be found at all. How can I check where they are connected to? Do they automatically connect to my Wifi or to the old Sonos bridge.

Thanks for your help.

The Bridge is now old tech and prone to failure, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue here so let’s park that for the moment and stick with the Bridge for your S1 system.

Is there any reason currently why you need the two new Ones on S2?  If not, I would try to add them into your S1 system.  To do that you would have to factory reset the new One speakers before trying to add them to S1 (Settings, Add Product).

https://support.sonos.com/s/article/1096?language=en_US

If you wanted to keep them on S2, given what you have tried already, I think you would also have to factory reset them, power off your S1 system (including Bridge), and then use the S2 app to set up a new system with the factory reset speakers.  You would do this as a wireless setup, not wired.

Factory resetting loses Sonos playlists, favourites etc, although if you add them to your S1 system then the S1 playlists etc will be available.

Whichever route you choose, I suggest you do this for one of the Ones only, and report back before you factory reset or do anything with the second One.

Note: the Bridge can only be part of your S1 system.

I hope that helps.

So I chose to keep two different systems (so the kids cannot mess on my music). I disconnected the bridge, reset one of the two Sonos Ones, found it on the S2 app and could play on it. So that works.

Should I try to do the same with the second Sonos One? Resetting or looking in a regular way? After being successful (and I guess not before), I turn on the Bridge again?

Btw - why can I still see and play with my S1 app on the other components? I had a look and they show all WM1 that should be without Wifi. How is that possibile?

On the S2 system, I think it would be best to reset the other One speaker, then use Add Product.  Given that it should be capable of being added to either of your systems, i would expect it to ask you to press the ‘join’ button on a speaker to identify which one it should join.  (Or possibly, as you are using the S2 app, you won’t need to choose.)

It sounds like at some point your wireless network name and password have been entered into your S1 system.  So the S1 speakers are connecting to your WiFi, rather than connect to SonosNet via your Bridge.  Your choices are:

  1. Reconnect the Bridge by Ethernet.  If you give it a few minutes the system should configure to SonosNet and show WM:0 rather than WM:1.
  2. Connect one of your S1 speakers to the router by Ethernet, if one is within convenient range. After reconfiguring you should have WM:0.  You could then bin the Bridge
  3. Just have S1 on Wifi and see it it is stable.  Bin the Bridge.

Please post back on how it goes.

John,

all as it was: the two apps manage the speakers they are supposed to manage and reconnecting the Bridge back to Ethernet, all but the newer Sonos Move are back to WM:0.

Very happy! Thanks a lot! You solved my problem. I am very grateful.

From your posts I understood that you’d rather advise me to bin the bridge. The problem is that I have besides quite a few devices of the household (iPads, iPhones, Smart TVs, etc.) also the whole security system of the house (cameras, door locks, ..) connecting to Wifi. I thought bundling at least all the Sonos speakers to the bridge that connects to the router should be easier to handle?! What is your opinion on that? I even thought that maybe I could upgrade my pretty old bridge to a boost… What do you think?

Thanks again!

No problem, glad to have helped.

Your thinking is fine about having a wired device. Your Bridge may go on for years so I shouldn't encourage you to bin it. If you have no problems with your system it's probably best to leave well alone.

As mentioned,  you could alternatively wire a speaker if convenient - any speaker can do the job of a Bridge.

A Boost, as you say, is another possibility.

If you retain a wired device then it is worth removing your Wi-Fi details from your S1 system. You can do this in Settings, System,  Network, Networks.

John,

I need your help again.

The solution I had might be the cause for continuous problems with my wifi. Not sure if it is true but might be the case.

I believe it could be best for me to separate old from new completely:

  • old system: two Play:5 (Gen 1) with the S1 app on a separate WiFi downstairs and get rid of my Bridge
  • new system: one Play:5 (Gen 2), one Move and two One (Gen 2) with the S2 app on the main WiFi

As my main WiFi runs also security cameras, door bells, etc. I need to be sure that Sonos won’t mess it up once in a while. Best seems to bundle again all Sonos components through a boost or similar?

Do you think this is necessary or are you not aware of any major problems with this?

Not sure if you remember the solution I had before but a lot of times I would loose and find again components. It seemed that randomly the components would choose to connect directly and not necessarily through the bridge I had. It was basically out of control. If that is the case in any way even adding the boost, I’d rather try without.

Thanks again!!

Christina.
