I have a Sonos 1 system in my house with various devices connected. One of them is a Connect Amp which is not compatible with Sonos 2, hence I don’t want to upgrade to Sonos 2. I have now bought a Sonos One SL which is not compatible with Sonos 1 and so I have to make a new system using the newer Sonos app. However, I seemed to have entered some “twilight hellscape” where everything seems to work fine and it all looks good up until the very last moment when the Sonos app eventually reports “No products found”. I’ve tried it a few times now with the same result. This forum query seems to suggest that I should turn off all of the existing devices before creating a new system. Is this correct? If so, why is this?

 

It helps to turn off all S1 devices if you are setting up a new S2 device because the S2 app will view any S2 capable devices that are still on S1 and think you are trying to upgrade them.  If there are no other devices running, it will default to setting up a new system.  


Well, that turned into an epic but I got there in the end!

I turned off all other Sonos devices in the house and tried again but still no joy. Even a factory reset of the One SL combined with a delete and re-install of the Sonos app on my phone didn’t make it work. The strangest thing was that it looked like it was working right up until the very last second. The app saw the One SL and it reacted to the chime PIN without a problem. It asked me to press the connect button on the back and when I did that, it set it up without a problem. It finally asked me for the password for the WiFi that my phone was connected to and when I entered that, I got a success message and a “Done” button to press. Returning to the main app screen at this point expecting to see my device listed, I got “Your system not found” and it remained like this even when I recycled the power on the One SL

I tried this a number of times over a couple of hours with more factory resets and more re-installs of the Sonos app but all to no avail until my phone eventually would not connect to the One SL at all. At this point, I noticed that my phone was no longer connected to my WiFi and when I selected the WiFi network again, it told me that my password was “incorrect”. I then “Forgot” the WiFi network on my phone, reconnected to it and this time the One SL connected and all worked as it should.

I work as a technical engineer and I have a lot of experience of IT but I’m finding this Sonos stuff to be incredibly opaque, frustrating nonsense. I cannot believe a billion dollar corporation such as Sonos have put this technology out in this state, seemingly with so little testing.
