Looking at 6 inch sonance ceiling speakers, and was also looking at 2nd hand ones too due to budget. There seem to be so many different model numbers. Most websites do not even state what model numbers they sell and it's typically only 1 6 inch option.
Are the different model numbers just different models over the years or are there actually a choice. The bundles with the amp prices seem to vary so much but not sure if this is due to a cheaper sonance speaker or just a genuinely good price, I can't tell because they don't state what model the sonance speaker is.
The whole naming/description of the in-ceiling gets into a bit of a mess and even worse on non-sonos websites.
What Sonos call the 6” speaker, has a 6.5” woofer and a 9.27” front face with grill on. Across various websites I’ve seen them described as 6”, 6.5” and even 9.27” Model numbers on websites will differ between seller internal model number, Sonos SKU (manufacture model number) or their UPC/EAN code.
Even the Sonos spec sheet isn’t consistent, highlighting 6.5” and 8” models at the top as key features of their in-ceiling range, but then in the spec table further down calling them 6” and 8” speakers.
Sonance also have their own range of ceiling/custom install speakers and their own website, which are nothing to do with the Sonos by Sonance range of speakers.
I wish you luck with finding what you’re looking for, but it sounds like it’s going to involve a fair bit of ‘what is this speaker really’
Really appreciate that. But yeap sounds like I don't really know what I'm going to get
A few sites list them as VP60R but when looking ar reviews on youtube there appears to be a VP62R and VP64R. 🤯
Make sure you are also tracking the “Sonos by Sonance” and “Sonance” differences if you want the ability to use Trueplay or three pairs of speakers. Only the originally Sonos sourced ones support that.
It was the sonos by sonance that most bundles come with so I'm assuming it will be that 1
The VPxxR look to be the Sonance Visual Performance range rather than Sonos by Sonance.
On this UK website for example, only the packages that say Sonos Ceiling are the Sonos by Sonance speakers. The others are bundles using speakers from Sonance’s own VP/C ranges, which look similar, but don’t support TruePlay and have a stereo/surround switch on the back of them.
If it isn’t one of these three types it isn’t fully Sonos feature compatible, they will work just fine but with the limitations of any non-Sonos speaker.
So what are better.... sonos in ceiling architecture speakers or sonos by sonance?
It would have been much simpler imo if Sonos just called them Sonos Architectural or Sonos In-Ceiling speakers, rather than including the name of the company who makes them for Sonos.
I assume Sonance have a reputation of quality in the US market, so when the agreements for Sonance to manufacture speakers for the Sonos Architectural range was made the name was included to convey a sense of quality and recognition. This could have been considered a two way benefit.
In the same way car manufacturers use the name of the company who design, manufacture and tune their integrated in-car audio system as a marketing tool to convey quality.
Unfortunately as Sonance also make speakers under their own name. If you search the Sonance website for “sonos” there aren’t any results, because they are Sonos speakers. It gets very confusing when 3rd parties add their random product titles to things they are selling and both miss-label things and don’t include the detailed specifications.
I think the naming has evolved over time as the range has expanded and in-wall and outdoor were added. From the current naming:
Sonos Architectural speakers = Sonos by Sonance = Sonos Architectural by Sonance = In-ceiling/wall/outdoor by Sonos and Sonance.
The marketing and branding teams really aren’t helping with so many different names for what should just be Sonos branded speakers, but presumably there is an agreement somewhere to use both names.
